Reviewers say 'Sleepy Hollow' is a visually stunning Gothic masterpiece, praising its Oscar-winning production design, breathtaking cinematography, and haunting atmosphere that perfectly captures Burton's distinctive style. Johnny Depp's quirky performance and the film's macabre aesthetic receive widespread acclaim. However, opinions divide on the adaptation's significant departures from Washington Irving's original tale, with some finding the creative liberties effective while others feel disconnected from the source material. A few reviewers also noted engagement issues despite the film's technical excellence.

Jack-O's Review: "This is my favorite Tim Burton film. It's so epically Gothic with awesome autumnal foggy scenery. There's jack 'o lanterns, a pumpkin headed scarecrow, gory head chopping scenes that uses practical fx, CGI and blue screen mixed perfectly. The blood looks gooey, red and so good. It's an homage to Hammer horror films and the burning windmill from Frankenstein but I think this movie is so much better and love it more than those actual films. Johnny Depp is quirky and funny, Christina Ricci looks great, Christopher Walken is always awesome, and I loved all the scenes of older character actors. Fantastic score by Danny Elfman. It's a perfect movie for me and for Halloween." ★★★★★ @trickhorrortreater

"This is the best-looking horror film since Coppola’s “Bram Stoker's Dracula.” It is not, however, titled “Washington Irving’s Sleepy Hollow,” perhaps because the story has been altered out of all recognition from the Irving classic. Perhaps not. No power on earth could persuade me to reread the original and find out. What it depends upon is Burton’s gift for bizarre and eccentric special effects, and a superb performance by Johnny Depp, who discards everything we may ever have learned or thought about Ichabod Crane and starts from scratch... Burton’s Sleepy Hollow is a dour place, the houses leaning together for support, the shutters slammed against newcomers. There is never a sunny day here. The faces of the village fathers are permanently frozen into disapproval. And the body count is mounting, while the head count stays at zero... Note: No power on earth could drag from me the identity of the unbilled actor who plays the Horseman when he has a head. But you will agree he is the only logical choice." ★★★½ rogerebert.com
"Sleepy Hollow started with Kevin Yagher originally directing Andrew Kevin Walker’s script as a low-budget slasher film. He didn’t get along with Paramount, so he was demoted to prosthetic makeup and Tim Burton was brought in to direct. Ichabod Crane is played by Johnny Depp. Much like how his role in From Hell, he’s attempting to bring modern science into policework while still knowing about the magic that exists in the world. His romantic partner is Christina Ricci as Katrina Van Tasse, who didn’t enjoy how one-dimensional her character was. Sleepy Hollow has been the scene of numerous decapitations, which gets Crane sent from New York City to investigate. The truth involves a mercenary soldier (Christopher Walken with Ray Park doing the heavy lifting), an evil stepmother (Miranda Richardson), a witch (also Miranda Richardson) and a pact with the devil himself. This film is filled with stars from horror movies and the films of Burton. Christopher Lee is a burgomaster. Richard Griffiths plays the town’s magistrate. Sir Michael John Gambon plays Katrina’s father. Real life pedo Jeffrey Jones plays the town’s religious leader. Martin Landau shows up in an uncredited role and Lisa Marie plays Ichabod’s mother, who was killed for practicing witchcraft. Michael Gough, who was in Burton’s Batman films, came out of retirement just to be in this movie. Oh yeah — and Casper Van Dien from Starship Troopers. The movie looks like a combination of a Hammer film and a Mexico horror movie with Mario Bava joining in. There are tons of forced perspective and limited effects shots, as Mars Attacks! was criticized for its dependence on them. Because the film was shot with such a blue cast, all of the blood was made the brightest of orange to show up on film. And everything — so it could be controlled — was shot on a soundstage. While nowhere near the majesty of its Hammer and Bava inspirations, this is a great film. I just recently returned to it and was pleasantly surprised by how well its aged." BAndSAboutMovies.com
"Sleepy Hollow is a must for Burton fans; it's gorgeously made, evenly-paced and pretty darn scary. However, if you hate Burton’s films or don’t enjoy seeing raging stallions with flared nostrils and headless riders emerging from Hell via a tree full of human heads (and it takes all sorts), best to leave the lights on and watch Never Been Kissed again." Classic-Horror.com
"Sleepy Hollow was entertaining with its creepy atmosphere, brilliant art direction stunning visuals/visual design and nicely picked cast. All of the actors gave excellent performances that could not have been better. The sound/music flowed well with the movie and gave it the extra creepiness which was not needed but much appreciated. I gave this movie a nine instead of ten because it had a lot of errors, goofs, and mishaps that could not be missed." Our Score: 9/10 HellHorror.com
“This feels like a good film but not a great Tim Burton film. The supernatural thriller plot seems a little too calculated and never one that holds you pinned with unfolding surprises. While the film is very well directed, there is never any scene that stands out in the way that the Day-O rendition in Beetlejuice, the haircut scene in or almost anything in the Batman films did.” 0to5stars-Moria.ca
“The film suffers from tepid performances, feebly drawn characters, and a meandering narrative. Regardless of how many eerie, fog-shrouded forest sequences, gruesome decapitations, and gorgeous matte paintings Burton offers us, Sleepy Hollow‘s look cannot obfuscate its numerous, glaring weaknesses.” ★★ ReelViews.net
"Tim Burton also included some scenes which are homages to the animated Disney movie The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad from 1949. This includes the scene where Ichabod crosses the bridge and hears the frogs croaking his name, and the scene with the flaming pumpkin. There’s a mix of fairytale and gothic horror in a perfect balance, where the slumbering and spooky village of Sleepy Hollow consists of beautiful periodic sets with crooked, twisted trees and old buildings which is a mix of Northern European and American colonial architecture. And while most of the movie was filmed in Leavesden and Shepperton studios, they actually built the village at the Hambleden estate at Lime Tree Valley. Compared to the Disney movie which was very colorful, this one is bleak and misty and kicks up the gothic atmosphere to eleven, perfectly complemented by Danny Elfman’s score. Sleepy Hollow is a fun gothic horror story that oozes Tim Burton from start to finish, and while very much removed from the original Irving classic, it’s an inventive and fun reimagined version of the story. It is peak Tim Burton, and a perfect Halloween watch!" HorrorGhouls.com
"A grand mix of Burton regulars and newcomers, the cast for this one is astonishing. In addition to Depp, Ricci, and Walken, we also get Helena Bonham-Carter, Michael Gambon, Miranda Richardson, Martin Landau, Jeffrey Jones, Richard Griffiths, and Hammer regulars Christopher Lee and Michael Gough. Walken is particularly menacing as the Horseman during the few scenes where he still has a head. Most of the Horseman's best scenes, however, feature Ray Park (Darth Maul from Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace). As stated, Depp's Ichabod Crane is a bit different than the original Irving version. That, of course, isn't the extent of the changes that Seven screenwriter Andrew Kevin Walker made to the story for his film. I think my biggest complaint (and it is an extremely minor complaint) is that being a purist for book-to-film adaptations, I would've preferred a bit more faithful adaptation. Considering how many times this same story has been attempted poorly over the years, the one chance for a big-budget, big screen adaptation ends up being a slightly altered story. There are a few more involved changes to the plot, but that would spoil too much. In all, I feel the changes provided the film an interesting take, if not a faithful one." "...From Emmanuel Lubezki’s gorgeous cinematography, to Danny Elfman’s wonderful score, to the costumes to the production design, Sleepy Hollow is just a bigger budgeted Hammer film. Every shot has Burton’s love of their films running through it. Even the cast is stacked with some brilliant British actors, from Christopher Lee’s delicious cameo, to Michael Gambon, Michael Gough, Richard Griffiths, Ian McDiarmid and Miranda Richardson and others. They throw themselves into their roles tremendously. Of the small number of Americans in the cast, Casper Van Dien plays a potentil square jaw hero well and Christina Ricci plays a potential love interest for Crane, with her own secrets. As for Johnny Depp, while I’ve enjoyed a few films he’s been in I can’t say I’m a fan in truth, but here he is pretty good as Crane... It’s not a scary film at all, but that said there is little to dislike there, even on a rewatch after all this time. It still looks visually stunning, it’s exciting and had me smiling all the way through. As a homage to Hammer, Sleepy Hollow is glorious. As a film on its own, it might be Tim Burton’s best work. Either way, I still bloody love this film." ★★★★½ TheGrumpOfHorror.wordpress.com
"Gothic fantasy movies just don’t come more lush than Tim Burton’s efforts, and in this thinly disguised slasher film, based on the novel by Washington Irving, a legendary headless horseman lops off the noggins of the inhabitants of the small north eastern town of Sleepy Hollow in 1799. Johnny Depp (looking much more comfortable than his debut in A Nightmare On Elm Street) plays Ichabod Crane, the constable from New York sent to solve the mystery... Gorgeous Christina Ricci is his beau, and together with Marc Pickering as the orphaned son of a recent victim, they make an attractive team. The entire supporting cast ends up decapitated by the murderous ghoul, played to the hilt with some fabulous FX and gory enough slayings. The only drawback is that it lacks a certain something in that when it does get going, it’s never for long enough to excite, and the plays for laughs become too frequent, especially when it could have been really eerie. Apart from that, this is everything you’d expect from a gored-up Tim Burton flick." Body Count: 17 ★★½ HudsonLee.com
"Sleepy Hollow remains, however, one of the strongest entries in the world of folklore horror, in my opinion... Those behind Sleepy Hollow knew exactly what they wanted to do with this movie and they did it well, something I’ve come to cherish deeply, as a number of stories I once loved continue to be plagued with problems of perpetually upping the ante. I still love this movie because at face value, it’s a good time, and despite my criticisms, has held up fairly well over the years. As a movie, Sleepy Hollow remains completely accessible for young and old viewers alike, ensuring its longevity." WhatsLeepsBeneath.com
