I love these 2 short films by YouTubers @LunarlightCinema, my favorites on this blog and on all of YouTube. Can't wait for Part III hopefully coming soon! Here is the description from the video:
You know that old tape you recorded off the TV years ago? The one with half the commercials still on it. Every October, you dust it off, pop it in, and hope it still plays.
This is that kind of Halloween tradition.
This version of Slash-O-Lantern Parts 1 & 2 was transferred to an actual VHS tape and captured back to digital for the most authentic vintage look possible.
Just some dudes making indie slashers.

Director Michael Dougherty’s Halloween classic Trick 'r Treat was re-released in theaters nationwide on October 14 and 16, 2025, for two nights only. This special theatrical event features the film in a new 4K restoration along with the restored 1996 animated short, Season's Greetings. Legendary Pictures, Warner Bros. Pictures and Saga Arts in partnership with Fathom Entertainment organized the re-release.
A modern Halloween classic, Trick ’r Treat has endured as a fan favorite for its chilling tales & its unforgettable guardian of tradition—Sam, the mischievous spirit who punishes those who break the rules. Written & directed by Michael Dougherty (Godzilla vs. Kong, Godzilla: King of the Monsters), the film weaves sinister stories set on Halloween night: a high school principal (Dylan Baker, Spider-Man 2 & 3) moonlights as a killer; a young virgin’s (Anna Paquin, X-Men Franchise) search for the right man turns horrific; Emma (Leslie Bibb, “The White Lotus”) & her husband learn the cost of ignoring rituals; & a cantankerous old man (Brian Cox, “Succession”) faces Sam in a terrifying showdown. Darkly funny, gruesome, & endlessly rewatchable, Trick ’r Treat secures Sam’s place as the true spirit of Halloween.
Join Dir. Mike Dougherty as he revisits the Halloween memories that inspired the film & brought Sam to life. Then see the newly restored hand-drawn short where it all began. Followed by TRICK R TREAT feature film.
Fathom previews, “For two nights only, die-hard fans and curious newcomers will have the chance to relive the frights, the laughs, and the twisted traditions of this cult favorite. Plus, audiences will get bonus content straight from writer/director Michael Dougherty himself.”
“Horror fans have long been thirsting for Trick ‘r Treat to take its rightful place back on the big screen and in cinemas nationwide. Fathom is thrilled to bring this classic horror film back in theatres in sparkling 4K with our partners just in time for Halloween,” said Tom Lucas, Vice President of Studio Relations at Fathom Entertainment. “A stellar cast helps make Trick ‘r Treat a frightening cinematic experience fans will not want to miss!”

@DreadPresents' The Jester, a gleefully gruesome Halloween chiller starring a menacingly macabre clown, is now streaming for free with ads on Tubi and Plex! Just in time to catch up before its twisted sequel drops later this year.
The sister company to Dread Central that released the 2017 Art The Clown starring slasher hit Terrifier has a new clown terrorizing Halloween night. DREAD warns you to beware of The Jester. The film had a limited theatrical run starting on September 29, 2023 and was originally released to VOD on October 3, 2023, followed by a Blu-ray release on November 7, 2023. The film is based on a short film trilogy on YouTube. Watch shorts below.
SYNOPSIS: After the recent death of their father, two estranged sisters find themselves being stalked by a malevolent being known as The Jester. Revealing himself to be more than just a man in a mask, the evil entity begins to further torment the inhabitants of this small town on Halloween night. The path to defeating this unholy monster lies with the two sisters who realize that the only way to survive is to figure out how to right the wrongs of their dark past.
Epic Picture Group CEO Patrick Ewald says, “When Brian Clarke (developer of The Mortuary Assistant game) introduced me to Colin’s insanely popular YouTube shorts of The Jester (over 30 million views), I was immediately captivated and knew we had to make a feature film out of them. It is incredible to see how Colin has taken his original concept and evolved it into a truly terrifying feature film. I can’t wait for audiences to experience this new face of evil in the supernatural entity known as The Jester."
Director Colin Krawchuk added, "It’s been so exciting to see the little short film we made back in 2016 eventually get us to the big screen. Turning the essence of a short into a feature was an unexpected challenge and one that could not have been possible without the hard work and dedication of a passionate crew. I’m excited for audiences to see our talented actors bring these new characters to life alongside a reimagined Jester."
Krawchuk wrote The Jester with Michael Sheffield. Eduardo SΓ‘nchez, co-creator of The Blair Witch Project, Mary Beth McAndrews, editor-in-chief of Dread Central, and Patrick Ewald served as the film’s executive producers. Lelia Symington (Brut Force), Matt Servitto (The Sopranos), Ken Arnold (Swagger), and Sam Lukowski (Satanic Hispanics) star in the film.
Jack-O's Review: "The film looks great, every scene is drenched in a beautiful orange hue and the lights/colors at the fall festival look very festive. I love the fantastic Halloween vibes, jack-o-lanterns, fall leaves, decorations, again the fall festival, and trick or treaters. One kid is even dressed as a black and white clown (Art the Clown homage?) The Jester actor is the best part of the film great suit, mask, and tricks. His mannerisms are very much like Art the Clown except the kills are gruesome but not as crazy gory. There are many bad reviews on IMDb.com, I guess people were expecting a straight up slasher killer clown film but It's more of a psychological/family drama about two half-sisters dealing with the death of their father with The Jester tormenting their thoughts in between. I liked it and I'm excited to see what they will do in the sequel coming later this year." ★★★ = Good @trickhorrortreater
More Reviews:
"The Jester plays things a bit too close to home, unable to find the right balance between family drama and malevolent horror. There are some good ingredients at work but they’re not achieving their full potential. It struggles to build up a bigger or more constant threat, instead feeling sporadic, making it difficult to create a gripping atmosphere to keep you glued in." ★★ FilmCarnage.com
"There’s no logic other than "just because" as to why, intermingling with the revellers, The Jester toys with this particular family. Unless it’s a fatuous suggestion that, as Krawchuk finally strains to distil this backstory into psychological allegory – that the villain represents the family’s hereditary flaw. This clutter simply isn’t needed…" ★★ TheGuardian.com
"The plot and style of The Jester worked really well for me at first, but it loses its way somewhere. Instead of focusing on the slasher story, it turns into a horror drama of sorts. One that is much more serious and deals with real-life issues in symbolic ways. There’s a good story there as well, but combining these two stories did not work…" ★★ HeavenOfHorror.com
"It’s too bad it gets tangled up at the end because there is a lot to like about The Jester. The title character is one of the better-looking antagonists to turn up recently, with his pumpkin spice suit and creepy-looking mask. Even better, his style of killing, using what looks like a magician’s hand gestures or having his tie act as a magic wand provides a much-needed change from knives and power tools." ★★ VoicesFromTheBalcony.com
"The Jester will not change horror in the future, but it certainly has plenty of good scares. With enough set pieces to keep entertained and a strong narrative backbone, there’s a lot to love. However, without extending that narrative, the holes are filled with some cliche horror tropes. With a more complete story, The Jester might have surpassed similar horror films." 6 out of 10, SunshineStateCineplex.com
