Monstrous Joe Bob Briggs in CRYPTIDS (2023) on Blu-ray, DVD and VHS

Indie horror producers Justin M. Seaman and Zane Hershberger new creature feature anthology Cryptids, starring Joe Bob Briggs, is available now to own on Blu-ray, DVD and VHS at ScreamTeamReleasing.com. One of the anthology film's segments takes place on Halloween. Synopsis, trailer and stills are below:

Major Harlan Dean (Joe Bob Briggs - 'Shudder's The Last Drive-In' and 'TNT's MonsterVision') is the host of the widely popular radio show "The Truth Serum", a platform which he discusses all things weird, unknown, and sometimes scary. On tonight's broadcast, Harlan tackles the topic of Cryptozoology to coincide with the annual Mothman Festival in Point Pleasant, West Virginia. However, with each caller, something more sinister appears to be waiting in the shadows and this could end up being Harlan's very last broadcast.

Described as, "A must watch anthology jam packed with practical creature feature effects and stories that are reminiscent of 90s' TV shows 'Monsters', 'Tales from the Crypt', and 'Tales from the Darkside'." Featuring segments written and directed by the creators of Force to Fear (Zane Hershberger and Robert Kuhn), The Dooms Chapel Horror (John William Holt), BoneJangles (Brett DeJager), Circus of the Dead (Billy Pon), Bong of the Living Dead (Max Groah) and The Barn & The Barn Part II (Justin M. Seaman).

Blu-ray, DVD, VHS Release Trailer:

"The movie’s best aspect is the creature effects. Each creature has its own unnerving features, and each is unique, though some resemble monsters you may have seen before... While the writing can sometimes leave a little to be desired, the film’s overall effect is entertaining. If you like creature features, each of Cryptids little creature slices is enjoyably nasty." ★★★ Read more at UKFilmReview.co.uk

"The anthology comes in at a brisk 76 minutes with all entries being quite delightful and entertaining experiences into cryptozoology. The project is well casted, well shot, as has Justin and Zane showing off their talents once again in the world of low budget filmmaking..." ★★★½ Read more at GrossMovieReviews.com

"... this was a solid anthology involving different cryptids... Tweaks here and there for me could have made this better. If you're a cryptid fan and want to see a decent anthology involving them, give this a watch. Be warned, it is a lower budget. I still think the effects are strong almost completely across the board." 6.5 out of 10 Read more by Reviews_of_the_Dead at IMDb.com

"As always with anthologies, the stories can be a mixed bag. That said, the gore is more than up to the task to smooth over any cracks and the main story is absolutely perfect thanks to Joe Bob giving a way better performance than in most of the movies he showed on MonsterVision." read more at BandSAboutMovies.com

"With stories that seem more like they’d be at home in episodes of the 90’s anthology tv show Monsters and less like encounters with the creatures that fans of cryptids may be expecting, Cryptids may end up being a disappointment that can’t be saved by some nice practical effects or the presence of horror luminary Joe Bob Briggs as the star of the wraparound segments." Currently Watching DARK HARVEST (2023) on AMAZON PRIME

Evil Stalks

MGM's DARK HARVEST originally premiered One Night Only at Alamo Drafthouse Theaters on October 11, 2023 followed by a VOD release on October 13, 2023 and started streaming on Amazon Prime on February 16, 2024.

SYNOPSIS: In a cursed town, the annual harvest becomes a brutal battle for survival. On Halloween 1963, Sawtooth Jack, a terrifying legend, rises from the cornfields, threatening the town’s children. Groups of boys unite to defeat the murderous scarecrow before midnight. Richie, a rebellious outcast, joins the run, motivated by his brother’s previous victory. As the hunt progresses, Richie makes a shocking discovery and faces a pivotal choice to break the relentless cycle.

Directed by David Slade it stars Casey Likes, E’myri Crutchfield, Elizabeth Reaser with Jeremy Davies and Dustin Ceithamer as Sawtooth Jack. It's based on the novel by Norman Partridge. Screenplay by Michael Gilio.

The book the film is based on, "is set during Halloween of 1963 in a small Midwestern town where teenage boys eagerly square off with the butcher knife wielding October Boy, aka Ol’ Hacksaw Face aka Sawtooth Jack.”

I rented the film last October and I just finished watching again tonight and I still love it. I've seen it 3 times and I can't recommend it enough. Definitely the best of the 3 better Halloween Horror Movies released last year. The others being, Cobweb (2023) and Totally Killer (2023).

Everything I liked about it? The story, the music, jack 'o lanterns all around town, the masks (Frankenstein's Monster, Wolf Man, Three Stooges, Richard Nixon and my favorite The Crimson Ghost, are just a few), the crazy gore effects and finally the killer design of Sawtooth Jack which looks like a cross between Pumpkinhead and Sam from Trick 'r Treat (2007).

Joe Bob’s Very Violent Valentine, shooting Cupid’s poisoned arrows, premieres Friday February 9th at 9pm Eastern on Shudder TV Live! I'll update this post later tonight with the titles of the two movies shown.

@therealjoebob's description of the films:

"The first movie was so violent that the MPAA ordered 53 cuts before it could be released. The second combined Andy Warhol's Factory with the sleaziest neighborhood in downtown El Lay. Put em together and you've got Gangsta Valentine's Day. This Friday night, it's gonna get NASTY."

Killer key art and title design by the awesome Justin Osbourn @slasherdesign. And get the official T-shirt and Hoodie over at Fright-Rags.com.

UPDATE: First movie up is Freeway (1996) followed by...

...the second movie Vamp (1986)!
