Reviews:

"Scott B. Hansen returns to the universe created in Bad Candy and expands it with a second film (with more to come) that can be seen independently of the rest... This one has a parade of fantastic creatures, has canonical alterations to known characters, kills immortal beings, makes alliances between beings that recent cinema told us were mortal enemies... That is, it has surprises that go beyond twist. Changes all content... One of the strengths is humor. The foul-mouthed characters, the small collisions between the story you're seeing and the expectations of the beholder. It would boost goodwill to compensate for some production failures. When it comes to terror it's exactly the same. Sometimes it has delicious scenes, full of blood, teeth, severed heads and torn limbs – all merit of the monsters created with practical effects. Less credible, but for our gaudio, in rivers of blood (credible color) to go out in the liters with each blow applied. Soon after there is a scene with terrible CGI that makes us think it was made by AI." (Translated from Portuguese) 6/10 Antestreia.pt

"Devour made me want to enjoy the company of its vampire musicians, then steadily weakened that affection. The grubby touring humor, practical creatures, and metal music offer real pleasures. Jerry’s response to Dylan’s desperation leaves their relationship underdeveloped, while inconsistent effects drain the violence of physical impact. A prolonged monster rampage turns early curiosity into fatigue. There is a scrappy creature comedy worth enjoying in these pieces, but too little of its excitement survives the assembly." Score 4/10 Gazettely.com

"DEVOUR is a movie that begins as a vampire horror movie with a kitsch vibe but evolves into something much wilder. In fact, I’m sorry to say that I feel it loses its way. Not due to the creatures featured, but the AI-fueled special effects do nothing good for it... DEVOUR is the kind of horror movie that starts out well but has a huge red flag from the very beginning: A runtime of almost two hours. This is rarely a good thing. When the budget is limited, it’s often a downright bad thing. Trying to extend the runtime with special effects that look either like bad CGI or generative AI is not the answer... The creature outfits and practical effects are solid for Devour. This is more than enough to make most horror fans happy. And I do mean most, as so many horror fans have long grown tired of bad CGI, and opting for generative AI instead does not make it better. In fact, it seems even worse, as it has no soul or passion left... I recognize that this movie has won several awards at film festivals, but this is nothing new. I’m sorry to say that some smaller film festivals have a very limited choice of movies to screen, so the competition isn’t exactly tough... Had its focus been solely on the gorgeous practical effects, prosthetics, and animatronics, this could’ve been really solid." ★ HeavenOfHorror.com

"Too Many Monsters, Not Enough Movie. Devour has the bones of something good. The shots are often well composed, the gore effects aren’t lame, and the editing has real chops, the transitions in particular are nicely handled. Then AI appears to have entered through the script itself and inserted itself into scenes that stand out hard against the work done everywhere else... The practical gore holds up in isolated moments. What keeps breaking the spell is everything spliced in around it. Explosions, a car blowing up with its number plate rolling across the road for no narrative reason, an aerial shot over a cornfield-adjacent stretch where the blood reads as smooth. None of it matches the tone or texture of the practically-filmed scenes sitting right next to it... Nearly every kill in the back half resolves the same way regardless of the wound. The werewolf’s mass rampage (which commences looking pretty cool) goes on long enough, repeats and then works against its own music cues (and my patience). The finale throws in a bounty-hunter machine gun and missile launcher expose, a warlock twist, and a closing cameo with a female Deacula that answers none of the questions the film actually owed its audience. Devour has a decent cast, good practical ideas, and a creative effects team who clearly needed more screen time. However, between the AI-generated inserts and a script this unwilling to commit to its own rules, it never gets out of its own way." Devour is rated ★★½ Monsters Too Many out of 5. VanessasNonSpoilers.com

"πŸ”₯πŸ”₯πŸ”₯ Devour is an intense and thrilling horror film that really pulls you in from the start and never lets go. The atmosphere is dark, the tension keeps building, and every scene feels powerful and meaningful. You can feel the passion and hard work behind this project. If you love horror, suspense, and stories that keep you on edge, Devour is definitely a must-watch. This is one you won't forget πŸ”₯πŸ–€" 10/10 Deafdan at IMDb.com

"Looks like low budget movies have started padding things out with AI slop now. This wasn't a good movie to begin with, but it seemed like there was something of a budget, as the actual shot footage doesn't look that bad and there are plenty of practical FX. But then it cuts to another smudgy, uprezzed Gen-AI slop shot and every last drop of goodwill goes down the drain. Disgraceful." ½ Ejussila at LetterBoxd.com

"They saved the best for last on day one of horror film fest! A really fun vampire, sorry fanger, horror comedy. A tiny lull in the middle before the final third monstered out with all the monsters in the best possible way. Stilted werewolf instantly iconic and the transformation scene was fantastic. So much blood and splat and heads mangled everywhere. Enjoyed every squish." ★★★★ Helen_S at LetterBoxd.com

"2 hours of a so called clan of vampires lead by a former confederate soldier that features several nauseating and seemingly ai generated shots." ½ wondermeg_ at LetterBoxd.com

"Loved it! This is pure unapologetically fun movie! I can't complain too much about the AI as others have cause the practical effects looked fantastic! Definitely worth a watch the team that put this together is very talented! This moxie was made with love of the genre for sure. AI was most likely used due to budget constraints." 10/10 thelonehare at IMDb.com

Jack-O's Review: Bad Candy (2021) delivers solid practical effects—highlighted by an impressively designed demon man bat—and leans heavily into a strong Halloween atmosphere that fans of the season will appreciate. However, uneven acting and a few weaker segments make parts of the anthology more awkward than entertaining. While it clearly aims for the same vibe as Tales of Halloween (2015) and Trick ’r Treat (2007), it never quite reaches the same level of quality. That said, if you’re in the mood for a Halloween-themed horror anthology, it still stands above many lower-tier entries in the genre. My previous rating was ★★, but after many rewatches, I’ve grown to love the Halloween atmosphere—my current rating is ★★★." @trickhorrortreater

More Reviews:

“This is ADHD moviemaking all right; the restless camera doesn’t really stay on anything that long, but the great practical effects and very on point Halloween production values make it watchable, if at times baffling ... This is scrappy, well played but ultimately rather uninvolving fare...” Bloody-Flicks.co.uk

“There seems to be a theme of retribution in the mix, but Hansen and Connell don’t offer an organized picture to really hang their big idea high. Bad Candy is a messy endeavor, and with lowered seasonal demands, perhaps its disjointedness will suffice, but in the grand tradition of horror anthology releases, it doesn’t have the consistency to really deliver prime Halloween escapism.” ★★ Blu-ray.com

” ...apart from a few outright ugly shots, plentiful passion exists in energetic production design ... A little more attention to technical details like consistent color timing and Bad Candy could hit for par on an average homespun indie course. Unfortunately for that effort, a tragically underfed script loaded with nearly nothing but redundantly empty deaths never stood a chance of plopping out anything other than a flop.” Review Score: 35 CultureCrypt.com

” ...a very satisfying entry in the horror genre, with a well-constructed series of tales – and a surprising pay-off at the end. Added crossover appeal is thanks to the presence of Zach Galligan, whose work in Gremlins defined a generation of cinemagoers and he is very good here as one of the DJs.” FilmAndTVNow.com

“A scary story often benefits from the restrictions of limited locations, a truncated length and the necessity for a sharp, smart twist in the tale. There’s none of this in Bad Candy, in which all of the stories feel roughly the same and none of them come to any sort of satisfying conclusion. Instead, there’s often just a weird clown wandering into frame and an abrupt cut back to the radio studio.” Film: ★ / Movie: ★ FlickeringMyth.com

“Muddled and messy, Bad Candy offers barely a morsel of the fun that a Halloween-set anthology should do. The creative team have tried their hardest to replicate the enjoyable madness of a film like Trick R Treat, but sadly do not achieve their goals.” ★★ TheHollywoodNews.com

“The practical effects are handled very well and help with the immersion ... The costume design is on point, especially in regards to the clown demon who acts as one of the throughlines through the vignettes. It’s actually really cool how they explain the creation of them (not sure of their gender) without giving us a boring expository scene.” HorrorObsessive.com

“It’s a far from perfect film, but with enough entertaining tales, laugh-inducing gore and spookiness to make it a solid transport to Halloween whenever the mood strikes.” ★★★ KillerHorrorCritic.com

“This is a crowded film, with stories that bleed into each other Short Cuts style, but there’s a coherent overall look, with an emphasis on 1980s-ish practical effects (you can imagine the vintage Fangoria spread). Nevertheless, it has a streak of ruthlessness that makes it more than a simple retro exercise – that MAGA hat and the Not All Men horror aren’t the only touches that root it in a 21st century divided America.” JohnnyAlucard.com

“Yes, Bad Candy is corny and silly, but it’s also a real blast, an ideal choice for the season. There’s a real love for Halloween at play here, and you can definitely tell that the creators love the theme immensely. It’s a playful movie with a generally fun nature, which makes it easy to watch and easy to like. Sometimes the stories are a little creepier, sometimes they border on comedy, but they all work.” Nerdly.co.uk

” ...while there is a lot to like here, it felt a little bit too long and didn’t go into quite enough depth in some of the stories to make it a perfectly satisfying anthology. It could have been better to cut something and lose 10 minutes than try to cram it all in, to let things breathe. Despite that nitpicking, one thing that is certain though is that Bad Candy is a cut above a lot of independent horror...” NerdSpan.com

“Most Halloween anthologies are content with four or five stories, but Bad Candy attempted to cram as many stories as possible in its hour-and-45-minute runtime. As a result, it’s inconsistent throughout, and unfortunately, it falls flat at the end when it concludes on the weakest story of the bunch.” 65% NoFSpodcast.com

“The tight story, breakneck pacing, high body count, dark humor, and exceptional effects combine to make Bad Candy an instant late-night classic that competes with some of the best indie horror movies from the past few years.” The Verdict: WATCH THIS MOVIE. SignalHorizon.com

“The lack of originality at times really hurts, and the segments are not really given time to develop. On the plus side, favouring mostly practical gore effects is great to see. Thanks to the cinematography of co-director Scott Hansen and Blake Studwell, the movie looks great, but the visuals can only do so much. There are a few too many tricks in this bag of sweets.” StarburstMagazine.com

“A deaf kid features prominently in the opening segment, and there are several POC included at various points too, but nobody is developed enough to really make an impact. They all, essentially, boast one-line descriptors — abusive stepfather, rat-faced drug dealer, horny weirdo, etc. The only real character development in Bad Candy, in fact, is with Paul and Billy, and even then, it comes so late in the game that it’s hard to conjure up much reason to care.” VagueVisages.com
