Daisy Hemlock and the Center for Lost Media tracked down a copy through the notorious bootleg catalog operation Trader Tony’s Tape Dungeon and labored through years of litigation with Monster Planet’s current rights holders to secure this release, which is proudly presented with the original commercials from its only known broadcast.

WNUF Halloween Special is a 2013 comedy horror film directed primarily by Chris LaMartina, who also helped to co-write the film. Parody commercials are shown throughout the film, some of which were written and directed by persons other than LaMartina. Its plot follows a television personality that decides to investigate strange supernatural occurrences at a house purported to be haunted. A sequel was released in 2022 under the title Out There Halloween Mega Tape.
IMDb SYNOPSIS: Originally broadcast live on October 31, 1987, the 'WNUF Halloween Special' is a stunning expose of terrifying supernatural activity that unfolded at the infamous Webber House, the site of ghastly murders. Local television personality Frank Stewart leads a group of paranormal investigators including Catholic exorcist, Father Joseph Matheson and the prolific husband-and-wife team Louis and Claire Berger. Together, the experts explore the darkest corners of the supposedly haunted Webber House, trying to prove the existence of the demonic entities within. Did they find the horrific truth or simply put superstitious rumors to rest?
PRODUCTION: While filming, director Chris LaMartina tried to make the film closely resemble 1980s footage and shot on vintage tape stock. Of the WNUF Halloween Special, LaMartina stated that as most viewers would be able to instantly tell that the movie was not an actual broadcast from the 1980s they instead tried to "make people remind themselves why they fell in love with VHS and blatant localism in the first place" and that the movie is "a love letter to VHS and public access TV." LaMartina chose to include several faux commercials into the WNUF Halloween Special, as he wanted it to more closely resemble advertising for actual television shows, which will frequently interrupt a broadcast to repeat various commercials. Filming took place in an old rectory in Timonium, Maryland, and the crew made multiple copies of the film on several VCRs to degrade the film quality to where it would more closely resemble a bootleg VHS tape.
VHS/DVD/BLU-RAY RELEASE: To publicize the film, LaMartina and the movie's producers left behind multiple VHS copies of the film in various locations, such as a VHS convention in Pennsylvania, where they left them in bathrooms and tables. Their intent was that by doing this, they would start a successful whisper campaign. Camp Motion Pictures released the film on VHS and DVD on May 23, 2017. A Blu-ray was released on October 26, 2021 by Terror Vision.
RECEPTION: Critical reception for the film has been positive. HorrorNews.net gave it a favorable review and commented that the movie had the potential to become a cult classic. Daily Dead and Dread Central also rated the film highly, and the Daily Dead wrote that it was "by far, one of the most enjoyable indie horror movies I’ve seen for some time."
MY REVIEW: Love this, one of my favorite Halloween films, must watch every year. Really captures the feel of 80's commercials, news programs, specials and vhs recordings. My only gripe is near the end of the film just when happenings in the Webber House start to get more interesting they would cut to commercial too often and replay the same ads just like a real broadcast. Besides that I still give it 4 out of 4 VHS cassettes, Excellent:

WNUF TV28 presents Frank Stewart Investigates: HALLOWEEN.
This truly bizarre spoken word record was introduced after WNUF personality Frank Stewart and his guests disappeared during the infamous live broadcast of his WNUF HALLOWEEN SPECIAL in October 1987. The initial vinyl album was compiled and produced by WNUF staff to help fund search efforts for all of the missing parties.
SIDE ONE features rare audio recordings of Frank Stewart’s cutting-edge investigative reporting. Formerly a silver-tongued disc jockey, Frank joined the WNUF staff in 1984. His skeptic take on ghoulies, ghosties, and long-legged beasties were highlighted in his classic Halloween news packages. The rare clips heard here are audio excerpts from some of Stewart’s most memorable on-air news segments. Didn’t get a chance to see Stewart investigate the haunted laundromat, where clothes folded themselves and underwear disappeared? Well, now here’s your chance! Weren’t around to listen as Frank hunted down the River Hill Sheepsquatch in the dead of night? You’re in for a real treat!
SIDE TWO showcases fascinating occult analysis from everyone’s favorite paranormal research couple, Dr. Louis Berger and his wife, Claire. These unusual first-hand accounts were plucked from the Bergers’ extremely hard-to-find 1976 LP, “Sounds of the Spirit Word.” Listen closely as the Bergers document gruesome stories of Scottish banshees and disco boogeymen, and even give you step-by-step instructions on how to conduct your own seance!

WNUF HALLOWEEN SEQUEL: During 2022 LaMantina announced a sequel to WNUF Halloween Special entitled Out There Halloween Mega Tape via social media. He further stated that the film would simultaneously premiere on August 20, 2022 in Long Beach, California and Baltimore, Maryland. LaMantina released the film on DVD independently via his website and has stated that there were no current plans to license the film to a distributor or streaming services. A VHS copy was made available as part of a limited collector's set, which has since sold out.
The sequel is set in the 1990s and centers upon a talk show host sent to a farm rumored to have had several alien encounters. Production on the film was severely impacted by the COVID-19 lockdown and LaMantina reported that several elements had to be tweaked or restyled in order to follow lockdown protocol. He also noted that the 1990s was more difficult to portray due to the changes in technology from the 1980s.
Here is the synopsis for Out There Halloween Mega Tape: "A daytime talk-show host finds herself placed on a new program, and investigating a farmstead with a long history of alien encounters."
What the WNUF Halloween Specials does capturing the feel of the 1980's, the Out There Halloween Mega Tape does the same but with the commercials, talk show and alien special feeling exactly like something from the 1990's.
