10 Cozy & Creepy Horror Movies for Spooky Season Nights

If October is for getting scared, September is for curling up with a blanket, a hot drink, and a cozy spooky story. Today, I'm going to recommend 10 eerie movies with darkness and horror, but are also low-key atmospheric, not too scary or violent, and feel like a cozy night in a haunted house.

1. The Good Son (1993)

WHERE TO WATCH The Good Son (1993) STREAMING ONLINE:

The Good Son is about a young boy who stays with his aunt and uncle and befriends his cousin, who is the same age. But his cousin begins to show increasing signs of sociopathic behavior.

I had known about this movie since I was a little kid because I was a giant Home Alone fan. I always knew there was a horror movie where Macaulay Culkin was evil, but I never actually watched it until recently. I loved it.

This is pretty ideal cozy horror for me. It takes place in a coastal town in Maine and seems to move from late fall into early winter. It begins with beautiful fall atmosphere, a little snow on the ground, and just gets progressively snowier as the movie goes. It always feels chilly in a comforting way.

Elijah Wood is excellent as the sympathetic young boy who has just lost his mother, while Macaulay Culkin is genuinely disturbing without acting like a stereotypical creepy kid. He simply seems to lack empathy and does whatever he wants. The things he does become increasing in craziness, but never like crossing the lines of believability. The car accident scene was so shocking to me because it feels like something a kid really could do.

2. Curse of Crom 2: Crom’s Fury (2026)

WHERE TO WATCH Curse of Crom 2: Crom’s Fury (2026) STREAMING ONLINE:

I am a big fan of the first Curse of Crom, it's such a fun, indie, family-friendly Halloween movie. Curse of Crom 2: Crom’s Fury continues that story, with Mary being abducted by Crom into a closet in a very Poltergeist-style scene. Her stepdad and ex-boyfriend then have to track down Crom and figure out how to save her.

I think the first movie is better, and you should watch it before this one. What I love about these movies is how obsessed they are with the history and folklore behind Halloween. Crom is an actual ancient Irish death god, and while he looks like a Spirit Halloween animatronic, which I love, it gives the movie a real Halloween feel.

The movies are not set in the 1980s, but they feel like 1980s adventure movies such as The Goonies, Gremlins, and Poltergeist. They're full of practical effects, which are such a blast. The solid sequel leans a little more into comedy, but It's not quite as Halloweeny as the first one. Although they do end up going to the birthplace of Halloween, Ireland in this movie and I like all the Irish stuff. That's cool. I think the charcter that shines the most is Greg, Mary's stepdad, has the best emotional arc. You really do feel for him.

These movie are mostly family-friendly but they're not Casper. They're definitely not G-rated. There is actually some pretty good violence in here with Crom and his little minions that really operate a lot like Ghoulies, which is a blast. I fully enjoyed Curse of Crom 2 for me it was a sequel that delivered.

3. The Night Strangler (1973)

WHERE TO WATCH The Night Strangler (1973) STREAMING ONLINE:

Watch the first film The Night Stalker (1972) full film hosted by Svengoolie on Internet Archive:

Watch the sequel The Night Strangler (1973) full film hosted by Svengoolie on Internet Archive:

The Night Strangler follows reporter Carl Kolchak as he investigates a series of bizarre murders in Seattle. Women are being killed in strange ways, and Kolchak has to figure out exactly what kind of killer he is dealing with.

There is something joyous about watching a 1970s made-for-TV horror movie. This is a sequel to The Night Stalker, and I actually prefer it. Instead of the audience immediately knowing what the monster is, there is a genuine mystery surrounding the killer.

Now, I love Darren McGavin as Kolchak. Huge fan of him. Most people probably know him as the dad in A Christmas Story, but he is so much fun as this tough, wisecracking reporter. The movie eventually led to the television series Kolchak: The Night Stalker. That's just how great he is. People wanted more of him.

The Seattle setting also gives the movie a great atmosphere, especially the scenes in the underground parts of the city. The abandoned ruins, strange murders, and mystery all lead to a fantastic ending.

4. Something Wicked This Way Comes (1983)

WHERE TO WATCH Something Wicked This Way Comes (1983) STREAMING ONLINE:

Something Wicked This Way Comes is a quintessential fall movie and one of the best movies you can watch in the early fall, at the beginning of spooky season for its autumn atmosphere. It captures a sense of childhood wonder and nostalgia.

The story takes place during the Great Depression in a small town in Illinois, although it was filmed in Vermont. A dark, creepy circus arrives in town and grants people's wishes, but it really preys on their fears, insecurities, and regrets.

The heart of the movie is Jason Robards who plays the father of one of the boys. His old age is one of his insecurities, and the circus knows exactly how to use that against him. I do love Jonathan Pryce he is a shining star of the scary stuff here as Mr. Dark.

Some of the effects have not aged especially well, but the atmosphere remains excellent. Something Wicked This Way Comes is a perfect cozy spooky experience.

5. Housebound (2014)

WHERE TO WATCH Housebound (2014) STREAMING ONLINE:

Housebound follows a troubled young woman who is sentenced to home detention and forced to come to terms with her destructive behavior, her blabbering mother, and a hostile spirit who seems less than happy about their living arrangement.

This New Zealand horror comedy puts more emphasis on horror than comedy, and I enjoyed discovering it. The main character is deeply unlikable at first, but that is part of the point. She is an angry, messed-up person who develops into a much better character arc over the course of the movie.

There are fun side characters, her mom is a really funny presence, and I love the main security guy who turns out to be an amateur paranormal investigator. The house itself has some great atmosphere, and I especially love the visual use of the classic white-sheet ghost. That's just a perfect cozy spooky thing to me.

6. Cat’s Eye (1985)

WHERE TO WATCH Cat’s Eye (1985) STREAMING ONLINE:

Cat’s Eye is a horror anthology that has three short stories linked by a stray cat. All three of them were written by Stephen King, with the first two based on stories from Night Shift and the last written specifically for the movie.

Every story is great. The first, starring James Woods, follows a man trying to quit smoking by joining an extreme organization that will do literally anything to make sure he succeeds.

The second involves a man forced onto the ledge of a building by a powerful man whose wife he has been having an affair with. If you are afraid of heights, this one is especially intense.

The final story stars Drew Barrymore as a girl who finds a cat and encounters a strange troll, gremlin, or goblin creature that comes into her house and slowly steals her breath. I love goblin horror, and the practical effects are so fantastic. What a hidden gem.

7. The Thing That Couldn’t Die (1958)

WHERE TO WATCH The Thing That Couldn’t Die (1958) STREAMING ONLINE:

Watch The Thing That Couldn't Die (1958) full movie hosted by Svengoolie on Internet Archive:

The Thing That Couldn’t Die takes place on a ranch it's about a group of people digging for water discovers an ancient chest. When it is opened, they find a severed head belonging to a man executed for sorcery 400 years earlier.

This Universal horror movie is from the studio's decline period, but it's such a fun little admittedly silly movie. The young woman at the center of the story has psychic and witchy abilities that the family uses to find water. Instead, she finds the chest containing a cursed head.

There's a lot of spooky imagery around this head, especially as it tries to hypnotize people while its body attempts to reunite with it. It is not one of the great classics of the black-and-white era, but it is a solid movie that I really enjoyed.

8. Down a Dark Hall (2018)

WHERE TO WATCH Down a Dark Hall (2018) STREAMING ONLINE:

Down a Dark Hall follows a troubled girl sent to the exclusive Blackwood boarding school, where she discovers only four other female students have been admitted.

The dark academia atmosphere in the haunted boarding school is exactly what makes this pitch perfect for me. It is not a new classic, but it has a great cast and an interesting little story.

AnnaSophia Robb is very likable as a hardened, angry, troubled girl, while Uma Thurman plays the headmistress with a fantastic French accent. The school feels almost frozen in time, as if it were still the 1930s.

There are ghosts and creepy imagery, but the story does not go exactly where you expect. That makes it a compelling spooky mystery.

9. Sleepy Hollow (1999)

WHERE TO WATCH Sleepy Hollow (1999) STREAMING ONLINE:

Sleepy Hollow is one of my favorite movies of all time and my favorite Tim Burton movie. Johnny Depp plays Ichabod Crane, a skeptical detective sent to Sleepy Hollow, New York, to investigate a series of decapitations.

Burton takes massive liberties with the original story, but I think the changes work perfectly for a Hollywood horror movie. Depp's strange, quirky detective is extremely likable, and his obsession with science and innovation clashes with the old-fashioned villagers.

The atmosphere is nearly perfect. Burton made the movie as an homage to Hammer horror, and the dark, desaturated look gives it a gothic feeling. You get witches, dark woods, spooky trees, folklore, and the ghost of a headless man returning from the grave.

Christopher Walken is fantastic as the Headless Horseman. The movie can be genuinely disturbing, especially when the Horseman breaks into a young family's house. It is spooky, exciting, and perfect for the season.

10. Horror of Dracula (1958)

WHERE TO WATCH Horror of Dracula (1958) STREAMING ONLINE:

Watch Horror of Dracula (1958) full movie hosted by Svengoolie on Internet Archive:

Finally, there is Horror of Dracula, my personal favorite Hammer film. Like Sleepy Hollow, it has a strong gothic atmosphere and features Christopher Lee and Michael Gough.

This version takes massive liberties with Bram Stoker's novel, but the new ideas work. The story is condensed into a tight 90-minute movie that moves incredibly fast without feeling rushed.

Christopher Lee's Dracula has very little dialogue. Instead, he works almost like a silent slasher killer, every bit as memorable as Michael Myers or Freddy Krueger, who is not silent, but both make a massive impression. Peter Cushing as Van Helsing is one of the best Van Helsing vampire killers of all time.

There are so many memorable moments, from Dracula appearing at Lucy's window to Lucy fully becoming a vampire. If you want a cozy, spooky story with autumnal atmosphere, gothic atmosphere, and gives you everything you could want from a movie watched on a dark and stormy night, Horror of Dracula is absolute perfection.

HALLOWEEN Harvest: Spooky SCARECROWS & Creepy CORNFIELDS in 16 Horror Movies + Where To Stream

Cornfields It’s a classic horror film trope, if only because I’ve stood among rows of towering cornstalks at dusk before, and can feel it again. They create isolation, quietude, darkness. What’s a picture- postcard setting to some farmers is a terrifying puzzle of endless possibilities to others.

And the cornfield, is a setting that works wonderfully when you want that hazy sense of doom for a scary movie. You can’t see what’s lurking a few rows away, and every sound feels too close for comfort. With Clown in a Cornfield streaming on Shudder now, we’re taking a look back at some of horror’s most unforgettable cornfield sequences — scenes that remind us why we never, ever stray from the path.

🌽 Children of the Corn (1984)

Children of the Corn (1984) KILL COUNT
Children of the Corn (1984) KILL COUNT

WHERE TO STREAM  Children of the Corn (1984):

Children of the Corn, based on Stephen King’s short story, follows a young couple who stumble upon a rural Nebraska town inhabited only by children.

These children, led by the fanatical Isaac and his enforcer Malachai, worship a sinister deity known as “He Who Walks Behind the Rows.” The whole religious cult angle mixed with the supernatural stuff makes for this deeply uncomfortable portrait of what happens when people stop thinking for themselves.

The cornfield serves as both a sacred ground and a killing field, where the children perform their dark rituals and offer sacrifices to their god. If there’s a Mount Rushmore of creepy cornfields this film earns its place in the cornfield horror hall of fame.

🔇 A Quiet Place (2018)

A Quiet Place (2018) KILL COUNT
A Quiet Place (2018) KILL COUNT

WHERE TO STREAM  A Quiet Place (2018):

Post-apocalyptic horror-thriller A Quiet Place is about a family struggling to survive in a world overrun by sound-sensitive alien creatures.

John Krasinski and Emily Blunt star in and co-directed this movie that features very little spoken word to create intensity and meaning. Its focus falls mainly on themes of the strength and protection of the parental figure, self-sacrifice, and protection in the midst of ever-present peril.

One suspenseful sequence takes place in a tall, swaying cornfield, where the rustling stalks mask movement but also conceal lurking danger. Cornfields are scary. Cornfields where you can’t make a sound? Terrifying.

🧑‍🌾 Dark Night of the Scarecrow (1981)

Dark Night of the Scarecrow (1981) Carnage Count
Dark Night of the Scarecrow (1981) Carnage Count

This made-for-TV gem delivers old-school rural revenge horror with a scarecrow at the center of the storm. After an innocent man named Bubba is wrongly murdered, a mysterious scarecrow begins exacting vengeance on the guilty.

The finale finds villainous mailman Otis facing poetic justice in a cornfield filled with pumpkins and dangerous farm equipment. A sense of claustrophobia creeps between the rows, as the looming scarecrow pursues in the dark. It just goes to show television has scares and it has nightmares all its own.

🔥 Freddy vs. Jason (2003)

Freddy vs. Jason (2003) KILL COUNT: RECOUNT
Freddy vs. Jason (2003) KILL COUNT: RECOUNT

WHERE TO STREAM  Freddy vs. Jason (2003):

Crossover slasher Freddy vs. Jason pits Freddy Krueger's claws from A Nightmare on Elm Street against Jason Voorhees's machete from Friday the 13th.

The story follows a group of teens caught in the middle as Freddy manipulates Jason into killing to restore his own power, only for the two killers to eventually turn on each other. Jam-packed with over-the-top gore and fan-service action, we've been treated to supernatural horror and a bloody slasher showdown of epic proportions.

One of its most memorable kills occurs during a rave in a cornfield, where Jason methodically cuts through partygoers in a blaze of chaos. The rave may be lit, but the cornfield kills are legendary.

🎃 Dark Harvest (2023)

How To Beat THE DEATH GAME In DARK HARVEST
How To Beat THE DEATH GAME In DARK HARVEST

WHERE TO STREAM  Dark Harvest (2023):

David Slade’s underseen Dark Harvest concerns a town where, come autumn, a corn-man monster known as Sawtooth Jack arises from the fields. It delves into gross folklore and terrible initiations, taking Midwestern corn-fear and dialing it way up.

Teen boys are unleashed into the night, armed to defend the world and hunt down that very same monster, creating a very sinister nighttime cornfield hunt. Seriously, masked teens, supernatural horrors and dead quiet corn fields? Dark Harvest totally embraces those moonlit cornfield sequences to crank the creep level to 11… the kind of movie that really gets under your skin.

🍬 The Barn (2016) 🌽

The Barn (2016) - Movie Review
The Barn (2016) - Movie Review

WHERE TO STREAM  The Barn (2016):

The Barn is a retro throwback indie horror that pays homage to Halloween and 1980s slashers on VHS.

It follows two friends, Sam and Josh on Halloween night who accidentally awaken three demonic figures — The Boogeyman, Hallowed Jack, and the Candy Corn Scarecrow. As the creatures wreak havoc, the small town is plunged into a trick or treat massacre.

The Candy Corn Scarecrow (yes, he has candycorn teeth) stalks victims through a dimly lit cornfield, using the twisting rows as the perfect hunting ground. The Barn understands that no throwback horror is complete without a gritty, grainy, and gloriously gory stalk-filled chase.

👽 Signs (2002)

Everything Wrong With Signs In 16 Minutes Or Less
Everything Wrong With Signs In 16 Minutes Or Less

WHERE TO STREAM  Signs (2002):

M. Night Shyamalan sci-fi thriller, Signs is about a former priest, Graham Hess, who discovers mysterious crop circles on his family farm.

As strange events escalate, Graham and his family begin to suspect an alien presence is closing in on their isolated home. Shyamalan keeps things tight — it's less about alien invasion and more about a broken family trying to hold it together while something awful closes in.

The family’s sprawling cornfield becomes a central location, hiding ominous shapes and movements that hint at the extraterrestrial threat. And let’s be honest—the first time we saw that alien leg slip between the stalks, we were not okay.

WHERE TO STREAM  Clown in a Cornfield (2025):

A group of teens in a small town are stalked by a killer clown, named Frendo, who hides within the rustling stalks of a rural cornfield. Eli Craig directed this slasher which is based on author Adam Cesare's young adult horror novel.

As the town prepares for its annual harvest festival, the sinister clown's brutal blood-soaked kills turns the celebration into a hectic tension-filled nightmare.

It's got all the classic slasher stuff you want, but underneath it's really about small towns eating their young — literally and figuratively and solidifies Frendo as a modern horror icon lurking among the cornrows.

🐎 Sleepy Hollow (1999)

SLEEPY HOLLOW (The Headless Horseman) EXPLAINED
SLEEPY HOLLOW (The Headless Horseman) EXPLAINED

WHERE TO STREAM  Sleepy Hollow (1999):

Tim Burton's masterpiece Sleepy Hollow (1999) reimagines Washington Irving’s classic tale with a gothic, supernatural twist.

Johnny Depp stars as Ichabod Crane, a skeptical New York constable sent to investigate a series of brutal beheadings in the eerie town of Sleepy Hollow. A mystery/romance/horror with lavish period costumes and Burton’s signature dark atmosphere.

Early in the story, a menacing scarecrow stands in the cornfield — a bloody, unsettling scene of one of the best pumpkinheaded scarecrows ever filmed. It also serves as a grim omen of the Headless Horseman’s deadly presence.

😱 Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark (2019)

Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark (2019) KILL COUNT
Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark (2019) KILL COUNT

Guillermo del Toro and director André Øvredal masterful film based on Alvin Schwartz’s iconic book series, Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark is a horror anthology set in autumn 1968 in a small American town.

A group of teenagers discovers a mysterious book in an abandoned mansion, and its stories begin to manifest in terrifying, real-life events. A coming-of-age drama with nightmarish creature designs inspired by Stephen Gammell’s original illustrations.

One of the most chilling segments? Harold, a grotesque scarecrow stands rotting and menacing in a lonely cornfield, eventually coming to life to exact a slow, chilling vengeance as he stalks and gruesomely transforms one of the teens.

🪓 Pearl (2022)

Pearl (2022) KILL COUNT
Pearl (2022) KILL COUNT

WHERE TO STREAM  Pearl (2022):

Director Ti West's psychological horror Pearl serves as a prequel to his previous film X, and it's the second movie in West's trilogy that ends with MaXXXine.

I enjoyed both visually as the dreamscape and hallucination-like elements look like something ripped straight from a saturated Hollywood Technicolor nightmare. It’s really a portrait in 1918 during the spanish flu that shows what happens to someone whose career dreams rot from the inside out.

One particularly harrowing scene has Pearl in a cornfield having a sickeningly intimate affair with a scarecrow that truly blurs the line between loneliness and the completely insane. It is one more indication of how far removed she has drifted from reality, that is.

🏠 There’s Someone Inside Your House (2021)

How to Beat the MASKED KILLER in THERE'S SOMEONE INSIDE YOUR HOUSE
How to Beat the MASKED KILLER in THERE'S SOMEONE INSIDE YOUR HOUSE

A group of high school seniors are being targeted by a killer who exposes their darkest secrets in this Netflix slasher thriller based on Stephanie Perkins’ novel.

Makani Young, a newcomer to the small Nebraska town, must confront her own past while trying to survive the masked murderer’s spree. It's a teen drama with gory, suspenseful kills, it's got the slasher goods but also actually has something to say.

The film crescendos in a claustrophobic sequence set in a vast cornfield, the stalk turning into a confusing, tangled labyrinth where hunter and victim are trapped together.

👻 Hubie Halloween (2020)

Hubie Halloween Review & Ending Explained | Easter Eggs & Horror Movie References
Hubie Halloween Review & Ending Explained | Easter Eggs & Horror Movie References

WHERE TO STREAM  Hubie Halloween (2020):

Adam Sandler stars as Hubie Dubois a quirky good-hearted man, who unexplainably everyone seems to hate, is determined to keep his hometown safe during Halloween night.

As strange events unfold in Salem, Massachusetts, Hubie finds himself in the middle of a chaotic mix of scares, pranks, and genuine danger. The slapstick humor and light spooky elements make this film a family-friendly seasonal watch.

A chaotic chase scene turns the twisting paths and rustling stalks of a corn maze into both a hiding place and a comedic trap that adds to the Halloween-night confusion.

🐄 1922 (2017)

STEPHEN KING'S 1922 (2017) Ending Explained

WHERE TO STREAM  1922 (2017):

A cow meets its demise to help cover up a wife’s disappearance in this 2017 film set in and called 1922 a slow-burn psychological horror about guilt, greed, and the supernatural, based on Stephen King’s novella.

The story follows Wilfred James, a farmer who conspires to murder his wife to keep their land, only to be haunted by the consequences of his crime. As his sanity unravels, he is plagued by visions of rats, decay, and ghostly retribution.

The family farm fields are big and imposing figures in the film -- not just for being the scene of the crime, but in their role as visual symbols of Wilfred's all-consuming guilt and obsession. The cow seems like the only sane character on the farm, quietly chewing cud while everyone else spirals into murder, madness, and rat infestations.

🐦‍⬛ Scarecrows (1988)

Scarecrows (1988) Carnage Count
Scarecrows (1988) Carnage Count

WHERE TO STREAM  Scarecrows (1988):

Scarecrows attack as a group of mercenaries hijack a plane, steal millions in cash, and parachute into a remote farming area in this 80's supernatural film.

Seeking shelter in an abandoned farmhouse, they soon discover the land is inhabited by murderous, undead scarecrows. It has gory practical effects with a rural claustrophobia that makes you question any desire to see the country again.

Much of the terror unfolds in and around a dark, foreboding cornfield, where the scarecrows lurk and stalk among the rows and look menacingly built for chasing trespassers with murderous precision.

WHERE TO STREAM  Jeepers Creepers (2001):

Jeepers Creepers (2001) follows siblings Trish and Darry as their drive home through the Florida countryside takes a horrifying turn after witnessing a mysterious figure disposing of bodies near an abandoned church. Their curiosity soon makes them the target of The Creeper, an ancient winged creature that awakens every 23rd spring for 23 days to hunt and consume human body parts.

The "Cat Lady" House scene: While fleeing the creature, Trish and Darry seek refuge at an isolated rural home owned by an eccentric local woman (Eileen Brennan). Looking outside, she realizes that The Creeper is disguised as a scarecrow standing atop a post overlooking her property. She famously shouts, "That's not my scarecrow!" before trying to blast the creature with a boomstick.

WHERE TO STREAM  Jeepers Creepers 2 (2003):

Jeepers Creepers 2 (2003) expands the mythology by placing a high school basketball team directly in The Creeper's path after their bus breaks down on a desolate country road. Stranded miles from help, the players and their coaches must survive the night as the relentless creature stalks them one by one, choosing its victims before its 23-day feeding frenzy comes to an end.

The Opening Cornfield Attack scene: The sequel opens with young Billy Taggart out in the fields setting up scarecrows on the Taggart family farm. The Creeper has taken one of the wooden-post scarecrows physical place. Billy stares at the figure, slowly realizing it is breathing or shifting, right before the winged monster comes to life, leaps off the stake, and abducts him into the cornfield in front of his helpless father and brother.
