Halloween Horror Movies You Missed
I think I may have found the secret Halloween section on Tubi. I watched one Halloween movie and then Tubi just kept recommending me another one and then another one and then another one and I kept watching them. And these were movies I had never heard of or totally forgot existed.
Not your same 10 Halloween movies that you watch every year. That's what I found digging around on Tubi. Halloween is getting closer and if you're anything like me, you want to watch something a little different.
You're starting to dig around and look for movies you've never seen before or getting those Halloween recommendations from other people. And guess what? Tubi was a pretty damn good place to look.
So, today we're going to be discovering seven Halloween movies that you probably haven't heard of, but you should definitely put on your watch list this year.
Haunt Season (2024)
The first one is Haunt Season, a 2024 slasher that takes place inside a Halloween haunted attraction. A mass killer starts targeting people working inside the haunt, and pretty quickly those fake scares turn into very real screams.
Haunt Season surprised me. I wasn't sure what I was getting with this one, but when I watched it, I actually kind of liked it. It takes place inside a haunted attraction, or haunted house, whatever you want to call it. The set pieces are really great, the acting is pretty decent, and there are a lot of neon colors throughout the movie.
There is one part where the movie seems to stop dead in the middle to do some character building, which I thought was kind of weird. But once you get past that part, it is super fun. It's a fun slasher with a slight twist involving who the killer is and what his motives are.
The movie didn't get a huge theatrical push. It had a very limited release before being pushed into the digital world, and then it kind of disappeared. I found it on Tubi, where you can watch it for free, and I highly recommend checking it out.
Candy Corn (2019)
Candy Corn might be one of the most Halloween-looking movies on this entire list. It's Halloween weekend, a group of bullies takes things way too far, and an outcast named Jacob Atkins ends up dead. But Jacob doesn't stay dead for long. He is brought back to life to get his revenge.
This one was also a surprise for me. I started watching it after a different movie, and I just wasn't sure what I was getting myself into. It involves a circus and a group of performers, circus freaks I guess you would call them, who are part of a freak show. Jacob wants to become a member and travel with them, but he is also a kid who gets bullied at school.
Every year, the bullies come after him on Halloween night and torture him. This time, it was very literal, and Jacob doesn't survive.
Because he was connected to the circus, his pals don't take his death lightly. They bring him back to life so he can get revenge on the kids who killed him.
The movie gave me a Pumpkinhead feel. It's not the same movie at all, but there is something about the idea of someone being brought back to life to murder the people responsible that feels familiar. From Pumpkinhead, the dad is sad after his son was murdered, so he goes to a witch to summon Pumpkinhead to get his revenge on these kids responsible.
Candy Corn is darker than Haunt Season. There are some good kills, practical effects, and gore in this, which were really good. It is more of a slow burn, but it builds toward an ending that kind of blew my mind. The best part of this one is Courtney Gaines plays a police officer, absolutely loved him and he is the reason I kept watching, and Tony Todd also makes an appearance. The fact that this movie didn't get more attention with those two names attached to it is beyond me.
Creeping Death (2013)
Creeping Death was probably my favorite discovery we're going to talk about today. A group of friends accidentally unleashes an ancient Celtic spirit on Halloween night after stealing a mysterious sack. Now they have one night to survive and figure out what they are going to offer this thing before it comes for them.
I was shocked by how much I liked this movie. When it first came on, I thought it looked like it was going to be terrible. But as long as it has a good story, good performances, keeps my attention, and entertains me, I'm happy.
The movie isn't shot with the highest quality, but that didn't bother me because the story is so good. The performances work, and there is an amazing little twist at the end.
It also has a really awesome creature running around and killing kids. I can be sold on a horror movie if it has a really good practical creature, and this one was super fun. The practical effects are super great, the kills are fun, and it is Halloween through and through. You get pumpkins, Halloween decorations, and even a creature that looks like it belongs in the holiday.
Unfortunately, Creeping Death just got swallowed up by all the independent movies released every year. It has a relatively small footprint online, and it isn't one of those Halloween movies horror fans talk about every season. That's exactly why I want to put it on your radar.
Scary Movie (1991)
Don't confuse this Scary Movie with the huge comedy franchise. The 1991 Scary Movie is a completely different film, and its title may be one of the most misleading titles ever.
It follows a paranoid teenager who becomes convinced that an escaped lunatic is hiding around a neighborhood Halloween house of horrors. As his paranoia grows, he starts questioning what is actually happening.
This is a slow-burn horror movie, and the beginning is rough. A lot of time is spent setting up Warren, the paranoid young man played by John Hawkes. Once you get into the meat of the story in the second act of the story, though, the movie becomes super entertaining. Hawkes gives a great performance and plays the weird, paranoid little nerd kid so well.
Then you get to a twist at the end which is super fun.
Unfortunately, having the exact same title as the later Scary Movie comedy franchise has made this little indie movie even harder to find. Search for Scary Movie online and the Wayans Brothers movies and the sequels are going to come up first. You really have to dig to find this one.

When Good Ghouls Go Bad (2001)

When Good Ghouls Go Bad is a completely different kind of Halloween movie. Twelve-year-old Danny Walker moves to a small town that has basically forgotten Halloween. He discovers the story of Curtis Danko, a supposedly evil old man who died decades earlier after the town refused to let him participate in its Halloween celebration.
But when Danny starts digging into the legend, things get very weird because it looks like Danko might not be quite as dead as everyone thought.
This one is more of a family movie and has that old made-for-TV feel. It aired on FOX Family in 2001, that was a huge part as to why this movie disappeared. It didn't get a huge theatrical release, and maybe not a lot of people saw it originally.
Christopher Lloyd also stars, and he is always charming and he plays an amazing part always.
The movie is basically about a town that swore off Halloween after a horrific event. As Danny learns more, you discover what really happened. The ending is genuinely sweet — just a really good heartfelt movie.
After watching insane slasher horror movies with creatures, gore, and all this stuff. This one was just a nice relief. But it still has all the Halloween elements you could ever want: monsters, ghosts, pumpkins, decor all over the place, and even a huge pumpkin mountain. It's kind of like old cable tv nostalgia you would have watched on a Friday night in October as a kid and never forgotten.
The Barn: Part II (2022)
The Barn: Part II is an old-school Halloween gory creature feature that picks up three years after the original. Michelle, now in college, finds herself pulled back into the same nightmare.
The lore behind the barn is wonderfully ridiculous. On Halloween, if kids go to the barn and knock on the door while saying "trick-or-treat" three times, ancient creatures come back to life and try to murder all the kids.
As a sequel, The Barn: Part II goes harder, faster, and more ridiculous. The creatures are super fun, the gore is really on point, and there is plenty of splatter. Is it perfect? No. I actually prefer the first movie. But if you want a popcorn flick where you can turn your brain off and just be entertained, this is it.
The movie has everything: death, Halloween, pumpkins, nudity if you enjoy that, and a little cheese, which is why your girl liked it so much. It also features Joe Bob Briggs, Linnea Quigley, and Doug Bradley, yes, Pinhead himself.
Hack-O-Lantern (1988)
Finally, we go all the way back to the VHS era with Hack-O-Lantern, a gloriously strange 1988 Halloween slasher about a young man whose grandfather is the leader of a satanic cult.
Years after witnessing his father being murdered during a Halloween ritual, he is pulled back into his family's nightmare as a masked killer starts stalking people connected to him.
This one takes the slasher and cult genres to heart and combines them with classic Halloween horror. There are straight-up knife kills, the gore is there, it's an interesting story, and has all the Halloween vibes, the costumes, the wardrobes that the cult members wear.
It's a classic VHS-era movie that existed in the shadows for years. It wasn't a major studio release. It was simply pushed out to the masses, and you either saw it or you didn't.
The great thing is that Hack-O-Lantern is now much easier to find. You can even watch it for free on Tubi, and you can own it on 4K or Blu-ray from the Massacre Video website.
That's one of the things I love about the Halloween season. There are so many classic Halloween movies to choose from, but if you start digging around, there are so many fantastic indie Halloween horror movies you've never even heard of.
Some of these movies are going to be movies I'm going to watch every year. Especially Creeping Death. I really liked that one. And some of these discoveries can be that way for you. I'll admit some of them are great. Some of them are super weird and some of them are rough around the edges, but they all encapsulate that Halloween spirit with all the decor and all of the fun.
