20 Alternative Halloween-Set Movies 🎃 — Where to Stream for a Spooky Night

YouTube Playlist of 20 Alternate Halloween Film Trailers:

Every October, movie sites roll out their “Ultimate Halloween Movie Lists.” You know the type: 25 titles, all the usual suspects, and inevitably, John Carpenter’s Halloween is sitting smugly at #1.

And listen — I love those lists. As a die-hard Halloween obsessive, I read every single one hoping to find a new title to add to my ever-growing October watch pile.

But new discoveries? They’re rare.

So this year, we’re ditching the obvious picks. No Hocus Pocus, no Halloween (1978), no The Nightmare Before Christmas. Instead, here’s a list of lesser-known, underappreciated, or just plain strange titles to queue up when the trick-or-treaters are gone, the jack-o’-lanterns are flickering low, and the night feels a little too quiet.

Some are scary, some are weird, some are nostalgic, and a few might make you wonder how they even count as “Halloween movies” — but trust me, they all bring something unique to the table.

Grab your candy bowl, dim the lights, and let’s get weird.

1. The Woods (2006)

WHERE TO STREAM  The Woods (2006):

Lucky McKee’s eerie boarding-school chiller is part witchcraft story, part autumn mood piece. It’s not perfect (thanks, studio meddling), but the atmosphere drips with Halloween energy — creeping trees, vintage costumes, and Patricia Clarkson in full mysterious-teacher mode. Oh, and Bruce Campbell’s in it. Enough said.

2. The Houses October Built (2014)

Found-footage road trip through America’s haunted attractions — with a real-life creepy doll-masked stalker thrown in. The characters can be annoying, but the haunt sequences are so immersive you can practically smell the fog machines.

3. Lady in White (1988)

WHERE TO STREAM  Lady in White (1988):

Set on Halloween night, 1962, this ghostly murder mystery blends childhood nostalgia with genuine chills. Part Stand by Me, part supernatural whodunit, it’s a love letter to small-town autumn.

4. Pay the Ghost (2015)

WHERE TO STREAM  Pay the Ghost (2015):

Yes, it’s Nicolas Cage. No, it’s not bad. In fact, this New York-set Halloween mystery about a missing child works surprisingly well — especially for its rare big-city Halloween parade scenes.

5. The Barn (2016)

WHERE TO STREAM  The Barn (2016):

An indie throwback to 1989 Halloween, loaded with urban legends, cornfields, pumpkin patches, and homemade monsters. Feels like Halloween III meets a VHS rental from your childhood.

6. Extraordinary Tales (2015)

WHERE TO STREAM  Extraordinary Tales (2015):

Five Edgar Allan Poe stories, each animated in a unique style and narrated by genre legends like Christopher Lee and Guillermo del Toro. Not Halloween-themed, but dripping with gothic dread.

7. Boys in the Trees (2016)

WHERE TO STREAM  Boys in the Trees (2016):

Australian indie that’s part drama, part fantasy, part ghost story. Two estranged friends wander the streets on Halloween 1997, confronting old wounds amid glowing jack-o’-lanterns and TP-strewn trees.

8. The Monster Squad (1987)

WHERE TO STREAM  The Monster Squad (1987):

Kids-on-bikes classic with Dracula, Wolfman, and a whole lot of monster-fighting fun. No Halloween setting, but pure Halloween spirit.

9. Psychoville: Halloween (2010)

Darkly comic British anthology episode — creepy clowns, questionable motorists, and plenty of weird humor. No prior series knowledge required (just skip the cliffhanger ending).

10. The Town That Dreaded Sundown (2014)

Meta remake/sequel set in Texarkana, opening on Halloween night. Dreamlike slasher vibes meet true-crime mystery.

11. WNUF Halloween Special (2013)

A pitch-perfect VHS-era spoof of a 1987 haunted house news special — complete with fake commercials. Feels like discovering a cursed tape at a thrift store.

12. Millennium: “The Curse of Frank Black” (1997)

An atmospheric TV episode where Lance Henriksen’s profiler experiences a long, eerie Halloween night. Fog, ghost stories, and devil sightings galore.

13. Hellions (2015)

WHERE TO STREAM  Hellions (2015):

Pregnant teen besieged by demonic trick-or-treaters in the countryside. Surreal, creepy, and drenched in October visuals.

14. The Guest (2014)

WHERE TO STREAM  The Guest (2014):

Adam Wingard’s stylish genre mash-up — equal parts Halloween homage, action thriller, and dark comedy — with a killer synth soundtrack.

15. Kenny & Company (1976)

WHERE TO STREAM  Kenny & Company (1976):

Don Coscarelli’s slice-of-life pre-Phantasm comedy about kids in the week leading up to Halloween. Pure nostalgia, right down to trick-or-treat night.

16. The Witch (2015)

WHERE TO STREAM  The Witch (2015):

Colonial New England paranoia and genuine witchcraft dread. Not a “Halloween movie” per se, but its mood is pure late-October nightmare fuel.

17. Halloween III: Season of the Witch (1982)

No Michael Myers, but plenty of killer masks, Celtic lore, and one of the most unapologetically Halloween plots ever put on screen.

18. Dark Night of the Scarecrow (1981)

Made-for-TV revenge horror with the best scarecrow in cinema. Subtle, creepy, and set in a gusty, leaf-strewn small town.

19. Ghostwatch (1992)

WHERE TO STREAM  Ghostwatch (1992):

BBC’s infamous fake “live” ghost investigation that convinced half of Britain it was real. Caused outrage, urban legends, and one of TV’s great Halloween scares.

20. The Halloween Tree (1993)

WHERE TO STREAM  The Halloween Tree (1993):

Ray Bradbury’s Emmy-winning animated adaptation of his novel narrated by the author and featuring Leonard Nimoy as the mysterious Mr. Moundshroud, blending history, melancholy, and nostalgia into an enduring seasonal classic.

Final Thoughts

Halloween doesn’t have to be just the same five movies every year. Sometimes the magic comes from the unexpected — a VHS oddity, a TV special you’ve never heard of, or a quiet little indie that just feels right for the season.

Because part of the fun is making your own traditions. Dig up something odd, dusty, or forgotten — and make it part of your personal October ritual.

So this October, try something new. After all, even Halloween thrives on surprises.

20 Alternative Films for Halloween Night

Every year, sites like this one like to run their own take on the ultimate and comprehensive list of seasonally-appropriate flicks to watch on Halloween. If you’re someone like me who’s a little tired of the norm, and of reading through lists that have John Carpenter’s Halloween as the inevitable number one, here’s a list of obscure, unknown, or less obvious choices to watch on Halloween night after the sun has set and the trick-or-treaters have disappeared (hopefully the non-lame ones who knocked on doors instead of peering into car trunks)....

Hellions is a 2015 Canadian horror film directed by Bruce McDonald, written by Pascal Trottier and starring Chloe Rose, Rossif Sutherland, Rachel Wilson, Peter Dacunha, Luke Bilyk, and Robert Patrick. The film was an official selection of the 2015 Sundance Film Festival lineup and also screened at the 2015 Toronto International Film Festival.

SYNOPSIS: Strange trick-or-treaters plague conflicted teenager Dora Vogel (Chloe Rose) at her isolated home on Halloween. Under siege by forces she can’t understand, Dora must defend both body and soul from relentless Hellions, dead-set on possessing something Dora will not give them. With officer Corman (Robert Patrick: Terminator 2: Judgment Day) in tow will Dora survive and kill these forces of evil? From director Bruce McDonald (Ponytpool), set in a visually haunting landscape, Hellions redefines the boundaries of horror with its potent brew of Halloween iconography, teenage angst and desperate survival.

The Hollywood Reporter and IndieWire criticized both the film and its direction. The reviewers felt that although Hellions showed promise, it ultimately did not live up to its potential. The A.V. Club named it #3 on its list of 20 worst movies of 2015. At the same time, horror websites such as Coming Soon and Bloody Disgusting reviewed it favorably and both outlets praised the film for its imagery and cinematic inventiveness. RogerEbert.com also commended the film, calling it a "perfect, light midnight movie" that, despite its shortcomings, "gets the job done". The Blu-ray release of Hellions was called a "must-add" to everybody's October watch list by Bloody Disgusting.
