10 (+3 honorable mentions) Must-Watch Christmas Horror Movies for a Bloody Good Holiday
For most people, Christmas is all about spreading holiday cheer, exchanging gifts, and making warm, fuzzy memories with loved ones. It’s the most wonderful time of the year... unless you’re a horror fan. For us, the holiday season isn't complete without a little carnage under the Christmas tree. Santa’s not just checking his list—he’s sharpening his axe.
I’m Jay from Bloodbath and Beyond, and we’re counting down 10 must-watch Christmas horror movies to spice up your holidays with some blood-soaked festive fun. From killer Santas to singing zombie apocalypses, pour yourself some rum and eggnog, and let’s get merry and macabre.
10. Anna and the Apocalypse (2017)
🎶 "This is the stupidest idea ever."
If Shaun of the Dead and High School Musical had a baby during the holiday season, it would be Anna and the Apocalypse. This Scottish zom-com musical blends catchy tunes with dismembered limbs and zombie mayhem. It’s bloody, bold, and bursting with heart. Follow Anna and her friends as they sing and slash their way through the undead to make it home for Christmas. Future holiday classic? Absolutely.
9. Better Watch Out (2016)
🔪 "Just imagine a creepier, more twisted version of Home Alone."
This home invasion thriller flips the script in brilliant, unsettling ways. The less you know going in, the better. What starts as a typical babysitting gig quickly descends into madness, with shocking twists that will leave your jaw on the floor. Better Watch Out is dark, clever, and unrelenting—perfect for horror fans craving something smarter and meaner this season.
8. Dead End (2003)
🚗 "What’s worse than spending the holidays with family? Getting stuck in a road trip from hell."
Starring Ray Wise and Lin Shaye as a hilariously dysfunctional couple, Dead End is creepy, funny, and filled with dread. When a family takes a mysterious detour on their way to Christmas dinner, they find themselves trapped on an endless stretch of haunted highway. Come for the awkward family tension—stay for the existential terror.
7. Sint (2010)
🎅 "He’s making a list… of people to decapitate."
Also known as Saint, this Dutch holiday slasher caused quite a stir with its poster alone. Depicting Santa as a demonic bishop, Sint shows Saint Nicholas as he was never meant to be—a murderous undead bishop leaving a trail of bodies in snowy Amsterdam. Outrageous? Yes. Fun? Absolutely.
6. Krampus (2015)
🐐 "What kind of half-goat half-demon walks on its hind legs?"
Before Krampus became horror's favorite Christmas monster, most films didn’t quite do him justice. Thankfully, Michael Dougherty (Trick ’r Treat) delivered a terrifying, high-quality vision of the myth. With creepy creature designs, demonic toys, and atmospheric chills, this film nails the spirit of anti-Christmas horror—and makes you think twice about losing the holiday spirit.
5. The Children (2008)
👶 "Could you, under any circumstances, kill a child?"
This British shocker is tense, emotional, and truly disturbing. When a virus causes children to turn against their parents during a holiday retreat, survival means making impossible choices. It’s a slow burn that explodes into pure terror—especially for any parents watching. Bonus: it’s directed by Tom Shankland (The Punisher, House of Cards).
4. Silent Night, Deadly Night (1984)
🪓 "Santa’s coming... and he’s pissed."
This one caused major controversy upon release for its depiction of a killer Santa Claus. Critics called it “blood money,” but horror fans called it awesome. Silent Night, Deadly Night is now a cult favorite—and rightfully so. It’s campy, sleazy, and way more fun than it has any right to be. Don’t miss the infamous “Garbage Day!” sequel while you're at it.
3. Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale (2010)
❄️ "Santa’s not jolly—he’s deadly, and his naked elf minions are pissed."
From Finland comes this darkly whimsical tale about the real Santa Claus—unearthed from icy captivity and held prisoner by a father and son. But Santa’s not alone… and his loyal (and nude) elves will do whatever it takes to set him free. Drawing from Eastern European folklore, Rare Exports is funny, creepy, and wildly original.
2. Gremlins (1984)
🐾 "A Christmas movie that haunts your dreams and touches your heart."
Joe Dante’s Gremlins is a horror-comedy classic that everyone knows and loves. Equal parts chaos and charm, this film is packed with festive destruction, mischievous monsters, and one of the cutest creatures in cinema—Gizmo. It’s spooky, hilarious, and absolutely essential Christmas viewing.
1. Black Christmas (1974)
📞 "Without this, we wouldn’t have Halloween—or the slasher boom that followed."
Directed by Bob Clark (A Christmas Story), Black Christmas is a chilling masterclass in suspense. Set in a sorority house during the holidays, this film introduced the “creepy caller” trope and helped define the slasher genre. It’s atmospheric, terrifying, and still unmatched to this day. A must-watch for every horror fan.
3 Honorable Mentions:
Santa’s Slay (2005) – 🛷 Goldberg as a murderous Santa? Yes, please.
A Christmas Horror Story (2015) – 🎄 An anthology with evil elves, ghosts, and a Santa vs. Krampus showdown.
Jack Frost (1997) – ⛄ A killer snowman with a very frosty temper.
🎄Final Thoughts
Christmas doesn’t have to be all sugar cookies and mistletoe. For horror fans, it’s the perfect season to indulge in something a little darker, a little weirder, and a whole lot bloodier.
