Jack-O's Review: Striking red and blue lighting and fantastic gore effects make this one visually memorable. The comedy didn’t quite land for me personally, though viewers who enjoy humor in their horror may find it much funnier. ★★

More Reviews:

"Take the effects and dark humor of Peter Jackson’s Bad Taste, combine it with the dynamic energy of Lamberto Bava’s Demons, and toss in a few scenes that could have been lifted straight out of Japanese anime, and you have writer / director Federico Sfascia’s Alienween, a crazy, bloody, over-the-top sci-fi / horror / comedy that’s a tremendous amount of fun... Alienween is high-octane entertainment from start to finish, with loony characters, tons of quick cuts (like a music video on speed), and practical effects that make the most of its meager budget. This is an insane, grindhouse-style gorefest, and I had a blast watching it!" Rating: 8.5 out of 10 DVDInfatuation.com

"Alienween is a bit The House, a little The Thing, a little Bad Taste, a little Shivers, a little The Night of the Living Dead and a little maybe, in The Mutations, even Tetsuo, with a very firm memory towards the Italian genre from Mario Bava to Dario Argento, and at the same time it is something completely different, never seen, of anarchist, heretic, crazy and dreamy Alienween is a distant threat that becomes intimate and bodily, it is an alien invasion that becomes a virus, it is a virus that becomes a mutation, it is a mutation that becomes the past that returns." Translated to English from cinelapsus.com

"Alienween has been drawing heavily from the last fifty years of the genre: there is the siege syndrome and the fear of contagion borrowed directly from the saga of The Living Dead of George A. Romero. There is the mutation of the bodies of Cronenberg’s cinema Cronenberg and Carpenter’s The Thing. The use of light borrowed from Mario Bava and Dario Argento. The splatter/slapstick comedy of The House and the mechanics of slashers. But also less obvious references such as the Lucio Fulci of Zombies 2 and the games of Chinese Ghost History looks." Translated to English from incunabula90.wordpress.com

"Now Alienween is most certainly not the most original of films, it borrows heavily not only from Alien - as the title suggests - but also from Italian genre cinema from yesteryear and straight-to-video fodder from the 1980s ... but then again, Alienween never pretends to be more than genre fun, including all the silliness you have come to expect from a film like this, it features more than its fair share of irony, and it's carried by a dynamic direction editing, and endearing practical monster effects that make up for their budgetary shortcomings with pure imagination. Fun, really!" SearchMyTrash.com

"...there’s a definite sense that this is an attempt to pastiche a certain type of 1980s genre quickie from Charles Band’s various outfits – though it’s a moot point as to whether that many folks need or want an extended homage to Bad Channels, SeedPeople, Troll or TerrorVision. Still, here it is – and plentiful wet, gruesome, cheapksate, imaginative effects provide some entertainment even as the human element is wildly inconsistent... It’s a problem that, following those ‘80s films, almost all the characters are shrill, strident and none too likeable before they get mutated... Like Night of Something Strange, Zombeavers, Hobo With a Shotgun and a few other recent horror comedy throwbacks, this looks beyond the accepted 80s ‘classics’ for inspiration – with results as variable as the films it riffs on. Here’s a movie that would like to make you think of Night of the Creeps, but all too often edges into Troll 2 territory. Scripted by Alex Visani and director Federico Sfascia." JohnnyAlucard.com
