Jack-O's Review: Not the greatest or funniest film I’ve seen, but I still had fun with this silly movie. The bear rats are clearly puppets or a guy in a costume, the CGI space scenes look pretty bad, and there’s some gore. Halloween fans might appreciate a few seasonal touches: two girlfriends dressed as a witch and a vampire head out for the night while their boyfriends stay home handing out candy; a teenage girl trick-or-treater shows up dressed as either a goth clown or maybe The Crow; the couple’s house is decorated with giant spiders; and the final scene features a field of jack-o’-lanterns. ★★★ @trickhorrortreater

"When you make a horror comedy called The Space Rodent about giant alien rodents with glowing eyes invading earth, and you even have a campy cool rodent design, you need to exploit your creative creature. Unfortunately, this film instead leans heavily on banter between its main characters to fill the time, leading to an 80-minute movie that will give you a chuckle now and then but starts to feel more like a 150-minute movie... The comedy has its moment, like a space rodent jerking off and cumming all over one guy’s face, and the cast is spot on with their comedic timing, but the material they have to work with just isn’t strong enough fill the gaps in between the space rodent action. And the space rodent action isn’t strong enough to make this one a good time. If the guys had been the focus, the film could have gone harder with a buddy comedy routine, especially since there is an underlying sexual tension to their friendship that could have been explored for laughs." BoysBearsAndScares.com

"The Space Rodent is a humorously lo-fi genre film with incredible energy. What it lacks in production budget is more than made up for in its on-screen antics. The practical puppets and special effects give the film its culty vibe. Sharp and witty dialogue by Robert Carrera, who serves double duty as both screenwriter and actor, gives way to several laugh-out-loud moments. In a nod to some of The Space Rodent‘s inspirations, The Goonies, Say Anything, and the Arnold Schwarzenegger sci-fi comedy Junior are all referenced in one way or another. This campy indie comedy is a blast to watch and offers a fun new take on the sci-fi genre." Cinemacy.com

"The people parts in The Space Rodent are never boring, which puts it ahead of 99% of monster movies. I was just expecting a party movie that you would have a great time medicating through. But it is more than that. Not to say you can’t party to it, as the opening would be very fun to do bong hits to. But this isn’t “so bad it’s good,” it is just plain good. It has plenty of pepper for the newly middle-aged audiences, as the Tori Amos posters and Gen X music references will delight. All the movie references, not so much, as some corny jokes make you hope they die. Carrera is very likable and very funny, which probably drove this movie’s ambition further so he could write good material for himself. Minard is a master straight man, a steely Abbott to Carrera’s goofy Costello (Google it, whelps). I would argue that the real big deal here is how, after a decent but unremarkable post-credit sequence, both barrels unload with a full-blown sequel to the movie we just saw. It is done entirely in photos running alongside the credits, and the sequel is a masterpiece. It is worth watching the first movie just to see what they would have done with the second. The Space Rodent is the space rat event of the season." Movie score: 7.5/10 FilmThreat.com

"Oh Rats !! > ...It's not a badly made movie but the alien rats are cute fur puppets with gnarly teeth . The actors are all silly and fun LOL. The movie seems like it could be a Seth Rogen/James Franco wannabe because of the " Pineapple Express " atmosphere LOL It's a good get baked and watch movie with no scary effects and predictable scenes. Also not bad for a low budget Indie." 5/10 mdc01757 at IMDb.com

"Writers Robert Carrera and Jason D. Morris put together a script that proved to be entertaining and enjoyable, mostly because it was so cheesy and campy. Sure, you know you're not in for a multi-million dollar movie here, nor an Academy award winning movie, when you sit down to watch a movie such as this. But "The Space Rodent" proves that a movie doesn't need to be such a thing in order to be entertaining. So thumbs up to the writers for that accomplishment. "The Space Rodent" had some fairly adequate acting performances. I was not familiar with a single actor or actress on the cast list, which was something that worked in favor of the movie. The effects in the movie were low budget, fairly amateurish and cheesy. But it actually worked in favor of the movie somehow. If you enjoy cheesy horror comedies, then give "The Space Rodent" a chance. I was genuinely entertained throughout the course of the 80 minutes that the movie ran for. And it is a movie that I warmly recommend." 6/10 paul_m_haakonsen at IMDB.com

"All in all, when you consider the fact that "The Space Rodent" took way more time than it did money to make, you have to give these cats a lot of credit for generating the amount of fun that they somehow create. It is an entertaining film, more so than you'd probably assume, and that's kind of a strange testament to their combined commitment to follow through on a concept that most would have likely passed on. Is this the product of some friends getting together just to do something different and have a good time? Probably. Was it all created just to film that one scene with the tidal wave of rat jizz? I'm not saying no. Have you seen worse than "The Space Rodent?" You absolutely have. While "The Space Rodent" might not be finding its way to the podium during awards season, make no mistake, the cast and crew combined KNOW what this movie IS. It's pure escapism, it's ridiculous, it's impressively crude, and intentionally over the top. I'm feeling like going with three stars out of five. "The Space Rodent" is an unlikely source of fun, perhaps, but I can't deny that I had a good time watching this movie and felt like I was pretty entertained from start to finish. I was never bored; I can say that with certainty." ★★★ IndyRed.com

"Whether it’s the exaggerated reactions of the characters, the hilarious use of hand puppetry, or the comically graphic moments. The film revels in its own absurdity with the result being a tone that is thankfully deliberate and self-aware. The problem with The Space Rodent is that it takes a very long time to get to this point, the film is 80 minutes long but is only really bookended by the aliens... Ultimately, The Space Rodent isn’t trying to be anything more than a low-budget, self-aware romp that delivers both laughs and shocks. It’s a film best enjoyed with friends, popcorn, and an open mind. While the puppetry and effects may be cheap, the sheer creativity and commitment behind the movie make it a surreal love letter to fans of campy sci-fi horror who don’t take their movies too seriously." ScreenCritix.com

"Between the costumes, trick-or-treating, and generally childish disposition, the premise takes a little getting used to, especially with the idea of a cosmic force on its way to wreak havoc. The film takes its sweet time building up to that moment, using that interval to develop its characters with some rather mixed results... When it finally delivers on its promise, The Space Rodent excels. While not every stride lands, there’s a satirical edge to the film that’s inherently evident. Almost like both you and the team behind The Space Rodent are in on the joke. The cast and Morris are clearly having a blast with this, and that infectious energy goes a long way toward making it a frequently entertaining watch. It’s campy and edgy to the max, featuring a plethora of gross-out sequences that leave absolutely nothing to the imagination. The effects can sometimes look rough around the edges, which is where that inherently campy charm comes into play. It’s almost like a homage to B-movie cinema, akin to the likes of Troll or Birdemic (although this is far better conceived and made). Needless to say, when it comes to these moments, viewer mileage will probably vary. But if a scene featuring the Kryptonification of a sentient space rat society didn’t clue you in, the warning signs were there from the beginning. You simply have to credit the filmmakers for taking this concept and running with it regardless of its inconsistencies. Recurrent uneven pacing and writing aren’t enough to deny The Space Rodent’s contagious fun factor that arrives just in time to kick the plot into high gear." ★★★ Take2IndieReview.net

"When The Space Rodent finds its feet around a third of the way in, it becomes a really enjoyable and fun sci-fi/horror/comedy ride. Prior to this it fails to really capture its audience and create a bond with its heroes – which is a shame if viewers tap-out early-on. It doesn’t really come close to living up to its influences, but one gets the sense this wasn’t the aim. The aim is to give the audience a fun ride – and this mission is accomplished." ★★★ ukfilmreview.co.uk
