There are a lot of movies that scream Halloween. We all know and love the classics, right? But sometimes you want something a little weirder, a little stranger, a little goofy, maybe even a little ridiculous.
These seven Halloween movies are not necessarily the biggest or most well-known Halloween movies out there, but they all have personality. They embrace the stranger side of Halloween.
So, let’s get weird.
1. The Midnight Hour (1985)

And the first movie we are going to talk about is, The Midnight Hour, a made-for-TV Halloween movie from 1985. A group of teenagers decides to throw a Halloween party, but their night takes a supernatural turn when they accidentally awaken the dead, including a vampire, a witch, and an entire army of zombies.
Somehow, this movie manages to be spooky, fun, romantic, musical, and completely ridiculous all at the same time.
There is even an entire musical number that my viewers pointed out had a very Michael Jackson feel to it and I never put that together. Now that I know it, it is so true.
This movie is so Halloween. You have costumes, a Halloween party, beautiful ’80s decorations, and it has such a Halloween nostalgic feeling and that is what I absolutely love about it.
It is campy and fun, and it is not meant to be taken too seriously. If you just want to have a good old time, check out The Midnight Hour.

If we are talking about Halloween movies that just want to have fun, it does not get much more outrageously fun than 1991's Ernest Scared Stupid.
Ernest accidentally unleashes an ancient troll named Tunnell who has been trapped beneath an old tree for centuries. Unfortunately for Ernest, the troll is not interested in haunting a house or killing a few people. He is after children, and Ernest has just given him a way to get them.
Ernest Scared Stupid is basically Halloween through the eyes of a child who has had way too much candy. We have trolls, trick-or-treating, kids, candy, spooky legends, practical effects, and a ridiculous Halloween story. This flick has it all.
It is also my favorite Halloween movie. I watch it every year, probably multiple times. I have always been a huge Jim Varney fan, and I love collecting his movies in whatever format I can find, mostly DVD and VHS. I don't have any Blu-rays.
He is just an inspiration for me and I absolutely love his movies. I'm sure a lot of people have already seen this one, but it is just the best Halloween movie, literally ever. Check out Ernest Scared Stupid.
3. Idle Hands (1999)
Apparently, as you get older and you become a teenager, Halloween is less about trick-or-treating, candy, and dressing up, and more about letting your hand run around and murder people. That perfectly describes Idle Hands from 1999.
Anton, a completely unmotivated teenager whose life mostly consists of sitting around watching television, smoking weed, and doing absolutely nothing. Until his right hand decides it has had enough.
After Anton discovers that his hand has apparently become possessed, it starts committing murders on its own. Anton spends the rest of the movie trying to stop the body part he cannot exactly get rid of.
Idle Hands is peak ’90s Halloween. It has the atmosphere, costumes, parties, ’90s Halloween decor, which is awesome. The movie is so nostalgic and the premise alone is completely ridiculous.
There's practical effects that are super fun. Seth Green walks around with a bottle hanging out of his forehead for the entire movie. It's just cheesy, good fun. This movie isn't serious at all, it's actually kind of slapstick a little bit.
If you enjoy that, this is the best Halloween popcorn flick you can watch. Sit down, turn your brain off, put on Idle Hands, and just have a good Halloween atmosphere time with all the ridiculous shenanigans. And this is a Devon Sawa movie, I absolutely loved him when I was younger and this is one of his most fun movies.
4. Once Bitten (1985)
Halloween has always had a way of taking classic monsters and making them more fun and ridiculous. That brings us to Once Bitten, a 1985 vampire comedy starring a young Jim Carrey.
A teenage boy gets caught up with a centuries-old vampire countess who needs the blood of a virgin to maintain her youth. What follows is basically an ’80s teen comedy colliding headfirst with a vampire movie.
Jim Carrey is especially fun to watch here because this was before all of his classic comedy roles. You can see hints of the ridiculous facial expressions he would become famous for, but he was still early on here.
The Halloween nostalgia is super fun. There is a costume party, a Halloween party, vampires, teenage shenanigans, and even a little romance. The whole situation is a bizarrely funny way, especially because the countess is trying to seduce Jim Carrey’s virgin character so she can get his blood.
Jim Carrey is just a masterclass at horror before he became the comedian we know today.
5. The Monster Club (1981)
One of the strangest movies on this list is 1981's The Monster Club.
This British horror anthology follows a vampire who invites a writer to a strange underground club where monsters gather. From there, we get several different stories involving vampires, werewolves, ghouls, and other creatures.
The whole movie is wrapped in a bizarre combination of horror, comedy, music, and gothic spectacle.
It may be the least traditionally Halloween movie on this list, but it definitely gives you the Halloween feels. The wraparound story takes place around the Monster Club, a place where monsters go to hang out. There is music, good tunes, monsters, and it's funny.
The individual anthology stories are decent, but the Monster Club wraparound itself is the best part. It is strange, funny, gothic, and entertaining.
And it stars Vincent Price and John Carradine. It doesn't get anymore horror, Halloween, spooky season vibes than those two just jamming out in a monster nightclub, telling stories to each other. It's fantastic. I highly recommend checking this one out. You will be entertained, I guarantee it.
6. The Barn (2016)
2016's The Barn takes place on Halloween night in 1989, when two friends discover an old barn that contains something they probably should have left alone.
Inside are three murderous creatures: the Boogeyman, the Candy Corn Scarecrow, and Hollow Jack. Suddenly, their Halloween night becomes a battle for survival.
This movie is basically a love letter to old-school 80's Halloween. It's got trick-or-treating, costumes, a small-town atmosphere, ghouls, and monsters that are so fun.
The practical effects are awesome, and this flick introduces its own folklore and mythology behind Halloween. The kids awaken these ancient spirits by trick-or-treating at the barn, knocking on the door three times and saying trick or treat.
There are rules about what you can and cannot do, as well as ways to kill the creatures to get rid of them. You learn these rules as the movie goes along, it's just fun and entertaining, and there is some good gore. Practical effects are on point.
The dialogue is not so great but The Barn is just a fun popcorn movie. You sit down, turn your brain off, and you're just entertained for an hour and a half of Halloween atmosphere, pumpkins, decor, plenty of costumes and some good gore.
7. Murder Party (2007)
Our final movie, 2007's Murder Party, takes the idea of a Halloween party and turns it on its head.
What if everyone at the Halloween party wanted to murder you?
An ordinary guy named Chris finds a mysterious Halloween invitation and decides to attend what he thinks is a costume party. Instead, he discovers that the party is actually a gathering of artists who have lured him there as part of a plan to murder him.
Naturally, things do not go according to plan.
Murder Party is probably the most serious movie on this list, but it is also one of the most ridiculous. It takes place almost entirely around a creepy little Halloween party, there are costumes galore, so much murder, great practical effects, and a lot of gore.
This is more of a classic slasher than a supernatural Halloween movie. It feels like a group of nerds decided they wanted to kill people, and you can only imagine how entertaining that is to watch.
The kills can be horrifying, but the strange setup gives the movie a unique sense of humor. If you enjoy Halloween atmosphere, slasher movies, and lots of good gore, you need to check out Murder Party. I highly recommend this one.
Final Thoughts
That's seven movies that are weirdly fun and not necessarily the scariest films you are going to watch this Halloween season. But sometimes the best Halloween movies are the ones you have the most fun with.
That is what makes all of these movies the same. They're ridiculous, weird, bizarre. But honestly, that is also what makes Halloween so much fun.
