"This movie is in an unusual middle ground: too mild for horror fans and too scary for those just starting with the genre. R.L. Stine's Pumpkinhead is, however, a good option for teens who are curious about slasher-type thrills. It has a level of scary similar to the first season of Stranger Things, and relies heavily on its soundtrack and sound effects for jump scares. It also creates a sense of nostalgia, with a 1990s vibe where characters still use landlines and flip phones. The open ending might leave younger viewers with mixed feelings." ★★★ CommonSenseMedia.org
"A perfect gateway horror film for kids. It's fun, genuinely scary at moments, and unafraid of darker consequences. The acting and effects are occasionally rough, but the spirit is spot-on. 3/5 stars." ★★★ Comradekas.blogspot.com
"The film succeeds in its mission as effective young-adult gateway horror. Director Jem Garrard delivers a visually assured feature that consciously embraces the nostalgic '90s aesthetic of its source material, utilizing excellent practical effects for its primary monster. While the pacing lags significantly during the expository second act, and character exploration remains superficial, the narrative still provides potent themes of isolated heroism. The commitment to a darker, unsentimental ending solidifies its genre credentials." Score 7/10 Gazettely.com
"This latest Tubi genre addition is a young-adult horror movie that could just as easily (and more accurately) be called a YA horror-comedy. There is a lot of humor and comedy throughout, which results in a nice blend of chills, thrills, and fun. With both fun moments and efficient jump scares, R.L. Stine’s Pumpkinhead is an adventurous genre-mix perfect for the whole family... I don’t know that your average horror fan will find this movie particularly interesting, as it is made for the young-adult audience. However, I do believe it could be a solid introduction to the horror genre for the next generation, so get the family together and enjoy. Just one final warning: The ending of this YA horror movie is surprisingly brutal!" ★★★ HeavenOfHorror.com
"Pumpkinhead is not a failure—it’s a faint echo of what horror can be. It carries the shape of a monster movie, carved in familiar patterns, yet never dares to cut deep. There is charm in its seasonal ambition and flickers of legend-building, but its restraint leaves it toothless. Horror Brains recognizes its place as an entry door, not a destination. For young viewers, it may plant the seed of fear. For the initiated, it offers only shadows without bite." ★★ HorrorBrains.com
"Based on R.L. Stine’s novel Pumpkinhead, this film is a thriller with a bit of horror... The plot is well-written with plenty of twists and turns to keep you guessing. The pacing is flawless, and the script makes fun of itself for monologuing and separating in a creepy house. The monsters are more bizarre than scary. So, they won’t keep tweens and older kids up at night. With all R.L. Stine books, there is a larger lesson at hand. It speaks of family, responsibility, and sacrifice. Becca, Sam, and Rusty make a superb team, and the actors had fun with their characters. This film is the perfect Halloween movie for the family. It doesn’t have any sexual innuendoes, off-color language, or political putdowns, only fright with a lesson." ★★★★½ ThatDarnGirlMovie.reviews
